It is officially demolished...they started at 7:30 am Easter Sunday, and were finished by the end of the day.

If they haven’t already, the City should put some huge tax incentives for any developer or project to build along that stretch of Broad Street.

Because it creates a tax-free zone. This probably determines whether there plan is viable.

Yeah, I get that's why, but I don't agree with it. If a business is a good one, it shouldn't need that. It gives businesses an unfair advantage.

It does not create a tax free zone. Urban reserves pay a grant in lieu of taxes to the city equal to what the property taxes would be in exchange for city services exactly like other levels of government and crown corporations do. It is the up to the Reserve to levy any taxes they feel are appropriate on businesses located in the urban reserve just like the City, Province or Feds do.

Well, in normal circumstances, yes, that would be true. However, they don't really get to operate tax free. It's just under a different name, as stated above.
I agree that it does give them a small advantage at the end of the day but as a consumer, you get the best deal of all here as the worst thing that can happen is that you pay the same as anywhere else. Otherwise, you get a break. Aboriginals get a successful business and consumers get cheaper products and services. Honestly, this model seems like a great idea for all businesses but that's just my opinion.

Ultimately the reserve system has been an incredible failure and highly counter-productive, though the urban ones are a much better than the rural ones.

I hope that this continues to spur on development in the the community, but I don't think it's too much to criticize that Status Indians do not have to pay PST on reserve. Consumption taxes work because it's universal. I really wish we had a government willing to make bigger changes and work directly to spur development, education and housing outside the reserve system.

The story I heard was they didn't like SLGA doing the wholesaling guess they decided the lemmings would come regardless of price.

Construction has started on the Olive Garden in Harbour Landing. I think that's what's going up between Structube & Urban Barn, at least.
