It did not start well after the oil boom had ended. They were already at the bottom of the excavation (22 meters, at the time Canada's 2nd deepest excavation ever, maybe still?) in early October 2015, Usually when demolishing a (relatively) historically significant building, plus having several hundred thousand square feet of your new office space pre-leased, plus all of your residential units being rentals, you're gonna go through with it. Also, excavation started in January 2015, three months isn't "well after". We got lucky, but not unnaturally lucky, considering it's Calgary.
