I'm just wondering... has anyone looked at the blueprints for the new "social housing" building going up on Ross? I just looked at it, and I do like it - HOWEVER, the suites don't even have so much as a kitchenette, inside of them...

Are they planning to add basic kitchens to the housing block? Or are they all going to force them to buy overpriced food from the corner stores and the Exchange District? Just seems like a weird thing NOT to include, in a building thats supposed to get people out of homelessness/poverty, by not including a basic kitchen in their units, to help return back to life...

Did they ever build up the old gas station lot, across the street from it?

It stated in the article that the centre would provide residents with three meals a day. So it’s probably a communal kitchen, which makes sense. It is much more affordable instead of building kitchens for every suite. It also creates a space where the residents can work together to learn social skills and to learn how to cook and prepare different foods safely.

If this is for the current residents of the Winnipeg Hotel it should be a great improvement in their living conditions and provide them with some degree of dignity. It will also free up the Winnipeg Hotel for a redevelopment similar to the Fortune Block. If that is the plan that strip of Main Street will become an amazing asset to the area.

Now the conjecture.....does anyone know if the Winnipeg Hotel plans include keeping it as some sort of small boutique hotel?, or is it too early to know?

This is the key in developments like this. Teaching lifeskills that many may not have, or have lost, and skills that can help people once they're ready to look for a (new) job. The unfortunate reality is that with some of the people that would live in a place like this, in-suite kitchens could also pose serious risks to themselves and other tenants.

I think it is great that the Pollard family is doing this, apparently their experience with the tenants at Winnipeg Hotel led them to realize the serious need for this kind of housing. I think the unfortunate part is that governments aren't already providing this kind of housing with these kinds of supports.

If they do transform St. James into a "boutique hotel", it would be a great place for people to stay when visiting Diversity Gardens.

Excellent point! I personally would love to see both the Winnipeg Hotel and the Masonic Temple buildings get a similar treatment (though the Masonic Temple building is probably wishful thinking on my part....unless the Pollards want another great project????

Hearing some rumblings about something tall and mixed use in the works for the South Portage area. Not a surface parking lot, but a very underutilized site. Hopeful it goes ahead!

Two different sites. Would be nice to have something on the Broadway/Main intersection again. I was 9 1/2 when the Fort Garry apt. block burned to the ground in '76. I don"t really remember it.

anything significant at broadway and main has me so excited. could be such a gateway project. just look at how much the forutne block has changed the face of that stretch! on that note, i wish there was a broadway-specific biz or something to market that stretch better. it's a cohesive strip and i feel the downtown biz is way too stretched for its own good.. broadway should have its own identity. anyway blah blah blah lol

All it would take for Broadway to have its own visual identity (at a very low cost):
- Stop replacing poles and street lights with unpainted steel. Make everything either black/rod iron or green on Broadway
- A nice unique street sign design that shows off the boulevard and trees

And, ASAP, new landscaping – those centre median pavers look like crap. Maybe an AT path all the way down the centre. The path would split close to intersections and the crossing point would be at the edge of the boulevard, for safety.

I have on my radar, something similar. Mine is on Graham west of Smith is all I can say.

Minus bulldozing the church... all I can immediately think of (on Graham west of Smith), is: Hull's Books, the parking lot in front of what-was Medical Arts, plopping a tower on top of the Millenium Library, or something to do with the Bay.

Could be demoing any of the smaller buildings towards the west end of Graham and replacing with larger development too.
