Probably this.

I've heard from enough for Winnipeggers who pursued opportunities elsewhere how fed up they were with the envy/negativity.

Despite this, I think most people kinda think very fondly of Richardsons, Chipmans, Artis etc and probably would listend. Since all are Winnipeggers, they don't come across like flaky Torontonian bankers looking to take advantage of people.

I hope they all rally a bit more next time.

Also, Watt Street, and E.K. in general, used to be notorious for bootleggers. I've heard that's the reason why there's so many corner stores in that area. Yet until the Curtis Hotel opened in either '50 or '51 there was not one single place to get a "legal" drink.

The only thing I miss terribly from that area is Charlie’s corned beef. Been looking for 30 years but nothing comes close.

Couldn't agree more. IMO they would need to really push the fact that they are speaking as Winnipeg citizens, or I fear the accusations of "pandering to the rich" would quickly surface.

I wouldn't be surprised if the group behind the U of W residential developments kicked the tires at the former car dealership lot! *fingers crossed* That little stretch of Portage seems to support redevelopment.. just needs someone with deep pockets and perseverence to get it going.

re-did the whole building and are supposed to be opening a new pub!

You need a building permit lined up before you can get a demolition permit in on a residential property. This is basically to keep residential neighbourhoods from looking like Detroit. Don't think the same applies in commercial areas.

A surface parking lot would need a conditional use application at this property. I doubt the City would be in favour of that.

Complete interior reconstruction and new windows. The exterior is still pretty beat up....I hope they fix that up too.

There is already the Active Living Center at U of M, Vertical Adventures, YFC has a wall, CESB has a wall, at least 2 shapes have walls, and Rady JCC.

I wasn't sure if it was a C2 or not...so no parking lot, just an empty lot. small victories.

Wasn't the St James Hotel hit by a significant interior fire forcing the need for a reno? That said the project has become more than just a pre-fire restoration effort though with the owners taking the opportunity to really refresh and reimagine the property.

Part of the motivation is that the existing occupants of the Winnipeg Hotel will be displaced by redevelopment. However, does anyone know what the redevelopment plans are?
