So apparently the 201 Portage rumours are true and they're about to blow out the entire main floor (except telecom switch area). Was told they've already secured a tenant that is opening a wine bar there, taking most of the former Starbucks area.

I think this is pretty awesome news! Are there any dedicated wine bars in the city currently? Or any at least downtown? Should be a nice add

I hope they orient the entrances to Portage and Main and get rid of that decrepit walkway in the front of the building.

I was told the entire main floor and entrance is being completely ripped open and remodelled. The underground and skylight are starting to rise out of the ground pretty badly, so it sounds like they're taking the "opportunity" to completely reconfigure that whole area.

I'm not sure what will come of the breezeway and how they might incorporate that. They just put up brand new signs for IG on the corner, so I'd imagine they won't be doing a ton to the exterior there, but it doesn't seem like it'd be that difficult to close it in to expand the interior footprint and put doors in the existing window bays.

I wish the property owners at p&m would have spoke out more publicly in support of opening the intersection and realsed details of their renovation plans (Richardson plaza, 200 Portage redesign, 201 lobby refresh, 300 Main). Three of these properties are planing for restaurant space, in a couple years there could be 4 restaurants right at the intersection. Would have gone a long way in showing the public there is private investment along side public funds (similar to TNS) and there are plans in the works to turn the intersection into a destination other then office/banks and there will be a reason to actually go there.

I completely agree. Found it odd that they all wrote those initial support letters, then just said nothing else the whole campaign. Armin Martens did do a brief interview with either WFP or CBC, but that's the only other thing I remember.

Maybe the wanted to avoid the inevitable shrieks of "why should we let those corporate fat cats tell us what to do in our city?" from the "everything is negative" crowd. You know, right after they bellow "why aren't those corporate fat cats doing anything to help our city?"

Well it’s their city too and more importantly their front yard, if anyone should have a say it should be the stakeholders in the immediate area.

Word is there’s no plan for the Portage Avenue site. The hope is it is easier to sell and develop with no building. This is the very same concept that led to the parking lot at Portage and Main 40 years ago.

I’m not super well versed in city policy but wouldn’t they have to get approval for demolition? The city has seen this scenario so many times, why would they risk a parking lot right on portage without any assurances that something was lined up for the site? Makes no sense, this city drives me crazy sometimes lol

Just because they were issued a demo permit does not mean they'd be able to get a parking lot permit. The one thing here is I believe this falls out of the downtown area that prohibits new parking lots.
