Agreed. While all those recent 1000-1550 footers have been exciting, they have dramatically raised the standard so that if Chase really turns out to be 1403 ft, it would be a yawn. NYC needs a megatall more than ever. For many decades NYC had one to three skyscrapers that dominated the skyline (i.e. the ESB and the original WTC), but it no longer has anything like that. A megatall would "make New York great again".

A megatall won't rise any time soon in NY.

We don't have any 1,400 ft office towers in New York, or any new massive single tenant owned office towers of this scale. Those days seemed to be gone. But Chase has proven they are not. I'm beyond excited for this one. If you can't get excited about it, then there isn't anything for you to get excited about, at least in this part of the world, and that sucks for you. I don't know what to tell you.

Yup very excited as well, not only are we getting another supertall with a great architect but I also like the fact that is not another glass transparent boring structure. This one seems to follow the new trend of 45 broad street, 9 dekalb, Steinway Tower and 35 hudson yards Having a golden contrast on the facade.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there currently a blanket height limit for the entire US of 2,000 ft. as mandated by the FAA? I always wondered if that were actually true and would stop us from ever having a Burj Dubai or Shanghai Tower here...which would make me sad.

False premise. Like America, New York is already great. It's doesn't need to be made "great again" by some rich asshole. That said I'll take an 1,800 footer, thank you very much.

Interesting responses to my post. I had been under the impression that people were excited about this project mainly because of the possibility of a significant height increase beyond 1,403 ft.

If NYC keeps building 1,000-to-1,550-footers and nothing taller, this height range would simply become the new roof, and the city's skyline would look rather flat. I am sure that eventually most of us skyscraper enthusiasts would start to yearn for something taller, but obviously how soon "eventually" is depends on the person. For me, "eventually" is pretty much now!

I have heard of the 2,000 ft ceiling as well, which is why the Chicago Spire was exactly 2,000 ft. At this point I no longer wish for the US to have the tallest building in the world, even if the 2,000 ft limit didn't exist. All I hope for is a new tallest building of NYC that's head and shoulders above all current supertalls in the city.

BTW, while some people use 2,000 ft as the cutoff for a megatall, a more widely used cutoff is 600 m, corresponding to 1,969 ft. The Central Park Tower's roof is already at 1,550 ft, and the 1WTC's spire reaches 1,776 ft. I agree that NYC won't have a megatall soon, but it could happen within a decade.

Yes of course, but I do think a city's skyline looks better when there is a dominating building. A great example is Chicago, where the Sears/Willis Tower complements the rest of the city perfectly. Some of those Asian cities look ridiculous when they have an 1,800-footer surrounded by buildings barely tall enough to be called highrises, but NYC certainly doesn't have to worry about that.

Chase, please give us at least 1,600 ft!

Think of 53W53. It's not the tallest of the bunch, but certainly a skyscraper I was most excited about. Of course, a greater height would be greatly appreciated here.

And I still think it could happen, but the excitement we have now for watching all of these towers rise basically at once is because it's not something you would expect to experience in any lifetime. We have become spoiled in New York as skyscraper enthusiasts, but there aren't a whole lot of cities on earth where you can watch this number of supertall skyscrapers taking shape. There are certainly taller towers being built elsewhere, and mini-cities taking shape, but not the same thing. We are lucky to be alive at this time.

Anyway, I've been obsessing over what few details we have on the new design, and I'm still convinced that the building sits on a pedestal, elevated above on all sides, not just the public plaza. I could be wrong obviously, but that's what I'm getting. As for the height, it's likely that it could be up, but not at all impossible that it could have decreased as well with the new design. We shall see.

^ Wow, a rare, reasonably positive comment from Brewer. Seems like there are still some unmet demands in her view, but seems positive that the development will go ahead. Not her usual tone.

She got pretty much what she asked for. She begrudgingly gave her approval because of that, but she still does want more. She wants Chase to give to more transit improvements, but that would be above anything they are already required to do. Her role is done, City Planning will approve the amendments, and Chase will build it's tower. The only thing left for us now is to get a full design reveal, including height, even as the tower is being refined.

She was actually right on this. Mostly, anyway. I don't support strong-arming Chase into making additional overly onerous transit improvements. But what she asked for -- and got -- has improved the tower and improved the experience of this block for the public. It is an example, and it should be followed.

I suspect it's buildings like that which the rezoning was really meant to replace, I wish we could trade it for 270 Park.

As per today’s The Real Deal, JPMC is buying the BoC building across the street for $100m.

I'm still not clear on all of the transfer rules. Is that allowed in this district?
