Codeshare alone won’t get you to the integrated ops and profitability allignmemt. JV is needed to capture beyond the hub revenue in both directions. JV is needed to coordinate schedules. JV is needs for. Ark eating purposes.

Has Hainan confirmed it is pulling out, or converting to seasonal? I don't see any pressers talking about it, and it looks bookable into October. Any chance they just haven't loaded winter availability? Mainland airlines do this quite a bit, just wondering if that is the only proof of it or if someone has other knowledge?

Airlines typically don't put out press releases when they cancel routes. There's been no real update since the rumors began circulating a few months back, than I've heard?

And no it's schedule appears to only be loaded until the end of October. Not even YYZ-PEK appears bookable beyond 26OCT19.

Given they were considering cutting before Canada-China relations tanked, you can be pretty sure it is gone now.

Wow, AC is trying this one again huh? They tried years ago on an E90, and it didn't work. I would think this would be a A220 route but surprised they are giving it a go again on a larger aircraft. I got family in YXU so this is a nice addition to be able to fly direct with real J.

EDIT: It's a Rouge flight. Now THAT makes way more sense.

Agreed, Acey. I actually figured they'd just mainline LAS too and put a 319 on it.

Any chance the Rouge's 319 & 321s will get slimline seats? Made a mistake over the holidays of riding in the back in one of these.

The 763s aren't bad in the back. But the 319/321s are pretty awful.

It is interesting that Air Canada is giving WestJet so much breathing room out of YYC. I wonder if they have made that decision consciously. WestJet would never be allowed to fail by any Federal Government, so let them develop out of YYC, but fight them tooth and nail in YVR, YYZ and YUL. That way, WestJet stays viable, but is denied opportunity to significantly challenge AC in big Canadian markets.

It is interesting. Westjet watches four markets closely: YYZ, YVR, YYC and YEG. AC is focused more and more on its hubs in YUL, YYZ and YVR, and will become even moreso as it concentrates on overseas flying as a profit maker.

Managers at YVR have been told their fortunes rise and fall with Air Canada. I suspect YYZ thinks similarly.

Perhaps we're finally starting to see a bit of differentiation where airlines in Canada develop competing hubs as opposed to competing at the same places all the time.

I would look at it the other way. AC has some growth strategy, a limited number of aircraft it can play with and its putting the resources where it is going to make the most money.

Getting into a price war with WS on a route from YYC is not a priority.

WS is dropping Terrace (YXT) service from YYC starting March 5th. Full article here:

https://www.terracestandard.com/news/westjet-bails-on-terrace-calgary-connection/

Interesting this will be the 2nd time they tried and pulled out. I wonder if there will be a 3rd try once the LNG stuff really ramps up? I feel like this try was premature, but there's definite hope it will be viable one day. They are adding YXT-YVR capacity instead now

YYC is AC's smallest hub and sits between a small hub and "large focus city". AC has made the conscious choice to make YVR their primary hub in the west, and WS has chosen the opposite.

With WS's massive investments in YYC I think AC is happy to let WS have it. Why fight WS at YYC when they are wide open at YUL?

There is already significant competition out of AC's major hubs - YUL/YVR/YYZ all have very significant foreign non-U.S. carrier traffic.

YUL is not a WS hub. It's an outstation for WS. And WS is in no way challenging AC's dominance in YVR or YYZ; I do not think AC is worried. AC still has 45% of domestic traffic and frankly, they are less concerned about domestic. AC makes its money on premium international.

YVR is WS's tertiary hub - it has considerably less traffic than YYC or YYZ. WS's hubs are in order of flights/traffic -

YYC > YYZ > YVR
