Yeah well I guess I just have a problem with the province holding monopolies on all sorts of industries. 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵, alcohol, insurance, power, the list goes on. It's bad for the consumer and bad for the tax payer.

🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 just blows my mind. Lessons in statistics should begin in first grade. Nobody would 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 if they understood probababilities.

There are continual radio ads here for casinos in Ajax, Ptbo and Niagra. Big business I guess.

The probabilities say there is a small chance of winning. And that's good enough for a lot of people it seems.

I would prefer to keep things like utilities public. And healthcare. But the rest, like alcohol and cannabis, not so much.

Losing control of your water supply, for example, to a private corporation does not sit well with me.

If it's going to exist anyway, then it's awesome that 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 is mainly provincially operated. It's a hugely profitable industry... why should that money be sent to shareholders in Las Vegas, New York or who knows where as opposed to staying in the province where it can be used for schools, hospitals and roads?

So long as it is used to those ends I suppose it's not the end of the world, but i don't think that it should be monopolized by government. Regulate it and protect the consumer but don't make it impossible for competitors to improve the product. Same with insurance and alcohol.

Utilities are less of a problem I guess but the we shouldn't be backing hydro's gambles in the north.

^Agreed. Also though, Government should not be raiding Hydro coffers like they did for many years. 100's of millions in profits taken and put into general revenues for the province. That's bad.

Industries like power generation are natural monopolies anyway. I'd rather it be government run than have a for profit company instill monopolistic pricing on it.

They still do, after the province too some kind of dividend payment 10 ish years ago they then raised the *Water Fee but multiple times it's cost which put a huge strain on Hydro's ability to maintain fair pricing. The province charges Hydro for all the water it flows through their damns. That's essentially how the province makes money off hydro. I believe it went from costing Hydro $45 million a year to close to $200 million in 2016. I can't confirm those numbers right now but I will look for it.

*Water fee isn't the actual term.

Sorry, I have no idea where I came up with the $200 million.

"On April 1, 2001, the NDP government also increased the water power rental fee it charges Hydro for using the water that flows through its combines. It more than doubled the charge. The annual fee jumped from $46.5 million in 2000 to $103 million in 2001." this is from a Winnipeg Sun Article from last March. It could very well be at $200 million now thought.

It doesn't say anything other than a verbal update is being provided. Is this a hint that you know something?

no, but that was the most recent news about that parcel (it's separate from railside as it's city owned). if it was something related to the railside development, I figured that would have been mentioned in the agenda...

City does the same with Sewer and Water. And that's why it won't truly be fixed for decades.

I see it being in the middle... the amount of work that place requires will have them choose smart yet potential frugal finshings.

I know a feasibility study was undertaken prior to the project which suggested this project would do well. Thoughts?
If the feasibility study says go (and assuming it's valid), I'd say go.

Transcona is growing, and growing beyond its former reputation.

Tens of millions ($10M-99M) as perceived by a layperson are hardly an appropriate gauge to determine if an entity is "doing fine".

Government has a long history of generally performing worse and to a lower standard than private industry.

^ This lay person does understand that they are renovating casinos dated to the 90's. The projects look fine. I haven't been there in years so can't speak first hand to the routing or whatever issues there may be.

They've haven't blown 10's of millions of dollars or are in debt trouble in any way, from what we can tell. IMO, it's a perceived issue by one poster. So what's the problem? Could a private corp be making more money, maybe. But that's not the situation.

Came across a good shot of the Medical Arts progress on Twitter:

The tweet itself allows you to see a bigger version of the image, as well as one of the new windows from the inside.

When I was at the poutine pop-up by Mon Ami Louis at Millennium Center, someone was checking out the historical bank vault, who had 2 people as reception. Why do I smell that something is going on? It doesn't seem to be a regular tour.

They've done a really great job with the proportions of those windows -- the ones that just have the little window blend really seamlessly with the ones who have the bigger windows... small details done well
