The 185 Smith (edited) project is currently doing select demolition in preparation for construction.

Might want to check your math. There are far more than 6250 people living downtown. Closer to 17000.

Yup, my bad. I was thinking of just the Bro-🞵🞵🞵 area. Either way it is still very exciting and great for the continued revitalization.

With the total TNS tower, Sutton Place residences, 300 Main, conversion of Sterling, Medical arts, a couple of projects in The Exchange etc..that gets us to about 20,000 downtown..Now to head to 25,000 then 30,000 then 35,000 ...
It is of my belief that the agencies trying to help the homeless will be in the wrong part of the core. SO, we attract those unfortunate or down on their luck or with issues to where it is less effective and inhibits the growth and the perception of safety.

Sorry, I'm not following what you're getting at here?

Kinda unlclear to me as well. It's best for the growth of downtown that these agencies concentrate their work slightly outside the growing areas, nor does a homeless person benefit from the presence of TNS or 300 Main.

There are plenty of pockets of downtown that can service these needs without being directly in the growing areas.

Bahhhh, I'm 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 tired. I meant the Edison Properties project at 185 Smith.

Edison’s residential portfolio seems to consist of middle to high end living spaces. With potentially big amount of money they will spend on 185 Smith, I imagine they probably plan to make it high end.

But the way is Fort Garry Place high-end? Edit:seems like middle-end.

Edit: nope it seems to be at the same level of other luxury apartments in the city

News reports today about the City moving ahead with plans for a north district police station. Sounds like they've scrapped the idea of building it on McPhillips (and displacing the football and baseball fields there as a result). But since that won't happen, the City is in a jam because it doesn't own any sites that are suitable for a police station. They have to go shopping for land.

One possible site that came up as a possibility was Logan and Salter. (Although if they're going to do that, why not just use the old PSB which is probably barely a kilometre away from that site...)

As the North District starts at the CP Mainline its too bad the city could not have gotten the land next to the McPhillips St Casino where the hotel is going to be built. It would have been in the general area of the Charlie Krupp preferred site.

I find it hard to believe that they can't find an appropriate site in the entire North End other than the Charlie Krupp location.

The city owns that land so it cut the cost down which caused it to score higher on the potential site list.

Apparently at one time the city was also looking at the old brewery site @ Redwood and Main but I don't know why that was discarded other than possibly it was too close to the Eastern edge of the district.

They are currently doing big renovations to entire floors and vacant sweets. I was living there not too long ago in an old sweet that hadn't been touched in maybe decades. Once I moved out my room mate moved into a smaller sweet that had just been renovated at it looked amazing. When I was living there they were redoing the entire 10th floor. They seem to spend a lot of money updating and maintaining that place.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and wanted to send off a question. I'm curious what your thoughts are of the Best Western Premier under construction in Transcona. I understand that Transcona isn't exactly the most high-end neighbourhood in the city; however, from what I gather, there is a need of rooms in that location of the city regardless. I know a feasibility study was undertaken prior to the project which suggested this project would do well. Thoughts?

I'm sure it'll do well for a few reasons:

-Transcona CN Campus drives a lot of hotel business
-casino and nearby major businesses probably would too, but to a lesser extent
-lack of competition in that area - there are two CanadInns hotels in that area which are the only decent hotels in that entire part of the city (am I forgetting any?)

Transcona is not a bad area, it's just a blue collar part of town that is set apart somewhat from the rest of Winnipeg. I would expect that a modest BWP hotel would probably do fairly well around there.

That said, the TCH East heading into town is probably the part of town where a decent new hotel is most conspicuously absent. There is a Super 8, a run down Travelodge and an older CanadInns a few KM north and that's it.

Canad Inn at Club Regent Casino will also be undergoing a 70+ room, 6 storey addition this year....as well as getting rid of that god awful 80's Aztec look. So there must be a demand or companies wouldn't invest the ten's of millions they are.

I was at club regent a couple months ago... honestly when did that place become such a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵. With The mishmash of architectural styles it should be the poster child for the ugly Canada thread. It’s honestly terrible inside and out now. No clear pathways through the gaming areas just machines and 🞵🞵🞵🞵 everywhere. It used to be organized and nice inside there. Lots of plants and the waterfall. None of that anymore. they removed the bar that was under that big tree and replaced it with a portable one? Who’s the 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 idiot that came up with that idea‽ They had a buffet in the middle of a lounge which was surrounded by machines. It was awful and the fact that you have random people walking through right past the food is disgusting and unsanitary. Honestly the whole site should be demolished. The people running that thing have no idea what they’re doing. Just relying on the zombies to keep 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 away their retirement money...

Just another reason that the government of Manitoba should not be in the casino business. Let private entities run the things when their own money is at stake and the situation would improve by necessity.

What kind of profit do the casino's bring in? 10's of millions? They're doing fine.
