For me it wasn't the cold, but it is a depressing city, and there are a few people on here who refuse to acknowledge this. The downtown is dreary as f*ck, the Exchange is maybe 25% what it should be in terms of development/amenities. OV has not really changed in decades. Stupid decision after stupid decision is made at the municipal level (ie: P&M, Marketlands, etc). Bowman exemplifies the suburban image, and he hardly fights for a thriving downtown despite his rhetoric. Despite what I thought, I did not know for sure if so many people were still leaving the province, but as Brent highlighted, they are.

What we need is someone like Brent Bellamy to run for mayor. Unless someone brings these issues up with Winnipeggers in general (outside of those of us on Skyscraperpage), things will just continue the way they are.

Something radical needs to be done with the status quo. Something that is bold. Not the negative Nancy types like certain candidates were in the recent election, and something not "mushy" like a certain PM who's currently in office.

Someone who has valid, yet highly focused reasons for plans and concepts on what Winnipeg's urban environment should be. Someone who has enough backbone to stand their ground and brush off what certain shortsighted councillors would say otherwise.

Downtown is depressing? Really? I have been to lots of cities in North America and especially in the summer Winnipeg’s downtown is far from depressing sure it needs the right leadership to take it to the next level but it is far from depressing. The footprint of our downtown size wise does make the Forks , Exchange , Bro Ass etc a little bit disjointed in connectivity but we are making strides slower than most people would like .

Oh man, here we go. The king of grinchland has arrived from perfect Edmonton everyone! We must all now feel like shit because he tells us we are shit.

Seriously, what are you doing to help make things better? Bitching and whinging? Never even acknowledging any of the positives, just fixated on the negatives. Same old tired boring sob song from you.

If things bother you so much, then why don't you get off your ass and do something yourself to make our, what was it, "depressing city" better in your perfect eyes. Oh wait, that's right. You don't want to do anything except bitch and whinge. A great contribution to the city and online community, you are.

I may disagree with you on some issues Penis, but you are absolutely correct. Winnipeg is a much better city than Edmonton.

Downtown Winnipeg > Downtown Edmonton

Osborne Village > Whyte Avenue

Manitoba Legislature > Alberta Legislature

The Forks > River Valley

Shaw Park > ReMax Field

Portage and Main > Jasper Avenue

Exchange District > Old Strathcona

Assiniboine Park > Fort Edmonton Park

All Edmonton has is the West Edmonton Mall. Let me repeat that: a MALL

The nice areas of Edmonton, are all outside Edmonton city limits (St.Albert, Sherwood Park, Leduc, etc.)

To be honest it’s easy for a person to grab a point or phenomenon that seems to be weak and less honourable, magnifies it, apply some emotions, and bash it hard to make the whole thing sound terrible. People with this kind of philosophy and conduct are called Sophists, and you know they should not be believed or taken in. They may have valid points but sometimes the way how they say things just make it very unbearable to hear, and possibly their goal is just to keep the other party silent all the time, make them feel hurt and defeated, and unable to reply.

In addition, this is the internet.

I agree completely. I have been to some much larger American cities (Kansas City and Detroit come to mind) that have downtowns that are filled with the kind of tall, fancy skyscrapers we would drool over, but become deserted and incredibly dull at night. Winnipeg's downtown has been changing over the years to include a number of very interesting, walkable streets and areas, dotted with interesting public art and hosting numerous events. Is it Times Square 24/7? No. Should we expect Times Square 24/7? Probably not!

Let's keep the discussion on what we can do to keep the improvements going, and avoid the "sophistry" please??

You’re taking advantage of the new marijuana laws by smoking too much. Despite the turn in economic conditions here, the number of both small and huge projects u/c and approved is one Winnipeg couldn’t reach in 50 years.

Let’s look at not a larger city, but smaller one like Halifax that is making Winnipeg it’s bitch. People moving there, people leaving Winnipeg.

Just bury your head in the sand. That’s worked for the past 40 years LOL.

I have an idea. Instead of crapping on Winnipeg, why not cease to post in the Man/Sask sub-forum? I enjoy hearing about my beloved hometown, and hope one day I can return, if I find a well paying job. I think this will be sooner than later. If you have nothing positive to say about Winnipeg, why say anything at all?

10% of my coworkers in Calgary are from Manitoba, vast majority of them Winnipeg. Guy applying for the same job I was, came from Steinbach. Entrepreneurs? Brandon...

It's a massive Winnipeg problem (they even said themselves that it's not usually personally related, mostly economic/crime/their futures), but overall it's a massive Manitoba problem, that everyone STILL leaves in droves for virtually anywhere in Canada, that has jobs and a non-1950s mindset.

If climate trumped everything then there would be no one left in Canada. The economy is king... people are chasing the jobs and opportunities. It's no coincidence that so much outmigration from Manitoba has been to the one province where they need help bringing the money out of the ground... no one is going to Edmonton, Calgary or Fort McMurray for the balmy winters.

It depends on one's situation. Climate was a big one for me, as was taxes and crime.

Massive problem? Not even close. If it were such a massive problem places like Steinbach , Modan amd Winkler wouldnt be boomtowns that they are now. Take a drive to any of those three and see how big they are now. Its stupid fast growth.

Also winnipeg isnt shrinking its in fact out pacing most of canada. Yes it stagnated for some time, alll cities do.

Look how many people left alberta when oil took a dump a few years back. They came back to winnipeg and other cities. Why? Because there are always jobs here, not the highest paying like the oil sector, but we have a very stable economy and its still alot cheaper to life here.

Crime wise????? We are not even in the top 10 anymore. Last i checked Alberta cities were in the top 10 aswell as Sask cities.

People need to understand that peopoe always leave cities to other ones. IF the net loss is smaller then then the net gain, notning to worry about.

Take Portage La Puke. One time the 3rd laegest in manitoba, now its getting to the point of just being a largr town.if that happens here . Then worry.

And as seen what will Alberta do when oil takes a dump again which it will. Edmonton has nothing to really offer once that happens, Fort Mac will be a ghost town and end up like our Flin Flon with the loss of the mining sector. Calgary is the only one that i think can survive since it has diversified alot. But i doubt it will ever fill all those gleaming office towers. Unless a a massive quake shakes Vancouver to the ground.

I still dont get people think tall glass towers are what makes a city. You dont see this in Ottawa or Quebec City or Halifax . Glass towers from what i have seen in almost every major city in the usa that i have been to tend to just have a ghost town in the evening. Pretty to look at though.

No surprise climate is a big one for retirees. But the conversation was about retaining younger people.
