"The community will benefit from New York City providing funding through a Payment In Lieu Of Tax (PILOT) program based on Amazon’s property taxes on a portion of the development site to fund community infrastructure improvements developed through input from residents during the planning process. Amazon has agreed to donate space on its campus for a tech startup incubator and for use by artists and industrial businesses, and Amazon will donate a site for a new primary or intermediary public school. The company will also invest in infrastructure improvements and new green spaces."

You can look at the incentives as an investment. Just like you buy a house, then when you sell it you make a profit. New York invests in Amazon and over time, all the jobs, businesses that it brings will result in more tax revenue.

It will be a net gain over the long term.

All you have to do is read these idiots twitter posts.

They don't even attempt to hide their radical views. They pretend to on TV and try to in their writing, but all you have to do is double check twitter and it's like, yup, she's a Femi-nazi, biased, partisan hack.

Perfect for CNN.

That's why I said consider the source to the article that Chris provided.

LOL damn, I just looked at that, congrats on your new big sugar mama Amazon.

But I thought New Yorkers made the case that the city was so desirable they didn't need to offer anything?

This makes me glad Chicago didn't get a piece of this mess.

Yeah it's surprising NEW YORK CITY of all places would offer incentives...they don't need Amazon....companies want to be in NYC, not the opposite.

Funny folks are trying to bash Nashville, but NYC looks way worse IMO.

Overall i find this result very disapointing after Amazon got everyone in a tizzy they are basically oppenning up some regional hubs in places with massive tax breaks

Absolutely Yawn Bezos, you could have really broke new ground totally transforming a medium - large southeastern city with your buisness and instead you are going to be 2nd or 3rd string buisness concerns in a place like NYC and DC.

Wasted opportunity, big letdown.

Yeah, but a Senator doesn't really have control of state laws/operations.

And in all fairness, TN hasn't done anything stupid or proposed to do anything stupid to restrict social liberties or punish businesses.

Agreed as far as your concerns about Nashville.

Sounds good if you've never actually been to Atlanta, but in reality there is simply VERY little density in Atlanta to justify heavy rail. They might benefit from commuter rail out to all the sparse suburbs though.

And literally the next post is about Nashville getting a smaller hub, LOL. I do agree that blue states had an advantage landing Amazon, but that doesn't translate to advantages for other industries.

And I think Nashville voted against expanding their mass transit earlier this year. I think they voted against adding dedicated bus lanes and possible light rail. I believe the Koch brothers ran ads opposing an expansion of transit. I guess the downtown/near downtown has high walk scores, but seems like much of the area is very car dependent. Never been there...

Does BrownTown not realize that Atlanta already has the nation's 8th busiest subway system with over 200,000 daily riders?

Some quotes:

States including Texas and North Carolina wind up toward the bottom of the list, despite being hubs of excellent higher education with progressive cities like Austin and Raleigh-Durham.

Those values also matter. The inexplicable hostility among many conservatives toward public transport, for example, means that liberal cities in liberal states had a built-in advantage over conservatives ones in the HQ2 selection process -- Amazon, understandably, would look for good infrastructure and public transportation options for its employees.

Companies like Amazon also rely on a diverse workforce, and likely don't want to be caught in the middle of squabbles over whether transgender people can pee in peace. And no doubt Jeff Bezos was watching when the lieutenant governor of Georgia went after Delta -- a company headquartered in his state -- and threatened their tax breaks for no longer giving special perks to NRA members.
I'm going to repost here something I posted in the Trump thread just to make the point that any suggestion the tech industry is tolerant of diverse political views is nonsense. It's just that the dominant--and strongly enforced--political view is consistent with CNN's and at odds with conservatism:

Why Did Facebook Fire a Top Executive? Hint: It Had Something to Do With Trump
By Kirsten Grind and Keach Hagey
Updated Nov. 11, 2018 8:16 p.m. ET

Facebook Inc. executive and virtual-reality wunderkind Palmer Luckey was a rising star of Silicon Valley when, at the height of the 2016 presidential contest, he donated $10,000 to an anti-Hillary Clinton group.

His donation sparked a backlash from his colleagues. Six months later, he was out . . . .

Mr. Luckey, it turns out, was put on leave, then fired, according to people familiar with the matter. More recently, he has told people the reason was his support for Donald Trump and the furor that his political beliefs sparked within Facebook and Silicon Valley, some of those people say.

Internal Facebook emails suggest the matter was discussed at the highest levels of the company. In the fall of 2016, as unhappiness over the donation simmered, Facebook executives including Mr. Zuckerberg pressured Mr. Luckey to publicly voice support for libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, despite Mr. Luckey’s yearslong support of Mr. Trump, according to people familiar with the conversations and internal emails viewed by The Wall Street Journal . . . .

Mr. Luckey, who is 26 years old, hired an employment lawyer who argued to Facebook that it had violated California law, according to people familiar with the conversations, in pressuring the executive to voice support for Mr. Johnson and for punishing an employee for political activity.

Then Mr. Luckey and his lawyer negotiated a payout of at least $100 million, representing an acceleration of stock awards and bonuses he would have received through July 2019, plus cash, according to the people familiar with the matter. The stock awards and bonuses were a result of selling his virtual-reality company, Oculus VR, to Facebook in 2014 for more than $2 billion, a deal that netted him a total of about $600 million . . . .

Mr. Luckey’s donation and the perception that he might be associated with a group that at times traded in misogynistic and white-supremacist messages, as some news stories reported, ignited a firestorm. Facebook employees expressed anger about Mr. Luckey on internal message boards and at a weekly town hall meeting in late September 2016, questioning why he was still employed, according to people familiar with the complaints.

“Multiple women have literally teared up in front of me in the last few days,” an engineering director, Srinivas Narayanan, wrote in one internal post following the meeting. Mr. Narayanan didn’t respond to requests for comment . . . .

Facebook launched a human-resources investigation, which in 2016 found that Mr. Luckey hadn’t violated internal policies, say people familiar with the investigation. His performance reviews were consistently positive, including his last in June 2016, those people say . . . .

I've been there, and yes, it is very car dependent. Even the road infrastructure wasn't built to handle the explosive population growth they're experiencing.

Show me on a map where you think it would make sense to add heavy rail. The limited dense corridors are already served. Maybe Alpharetta?

Grats to Nashville, fun surprise there. That's really a cool city. I wonder where it will be in a decade.

Thanks to the State of Georgia, that door will soon be closed. They're planning a $100 million bus rapid transit line instead.

That is important in the Age of Trump. Bezos is a target. Trump can pressure red state governments to take away AMZN tax breaks, and they will. Bezos was playing it safe IMO because geographically it make more sense to make ATL the 3rd city.

I would be much more worried about backlash by progressives over the LIC location than Conservatives over Nashville.

Not to put too fine a point on this, but in selecting both NOVA and LIC, amazon confirmed that they want to be near DC and NYC. They could have done this by consolidating in Philly.
That is all.
