Agreed!
Hopefully Kemp has different views & maybe he will think before he speaks...what a novel concept!
We will see what the Religious Liberty Bill does for business, especially the Movie industry.
Hate to lose Amazon and the Movie Industry in such a short period of time.

Those of you who read the biz chronicle regularly should be familiar with this contributor. If anyone was looking for an update on the Amazon to AT&T rumor.

If it turns out to be nonsense after all, then the appropriate response should be, "yeah, my bad" not insults.

Agreed.

But first and foremost, they must be around for others to hear them say it.

Amazon incentives are not on the Agenda for the Nov 13th special session, so it seems unlikely that date is significant. At least in terms of state incentives.

Come on everyone...Atlanta is a great city. It was great city before Amazon and will continue to be a great city. This has nothing to do with Casey Cagle, Nathan deal, etc. We simply aren't the city Amazon wants to establish their second headquarters.
As far as the movie industry, that's already slipping away. But it's not the government fault. We really should be embarrassed of what the government was giving up just to have some of those companies to film here anyway. Those other cities eventually stopped those ridiculous tax incentives and other perks, but not Nathan Deal and his people, he just kept giving more and more.

It is?

And Kemp scares me to death. The film industry (and Delta's pilots) is the only thing keeping the South Atlanta metro from becoming a gigantic low wage warehouse ghetto. Hollywood giving Georgia the middle finger because he wants to cater to the racists, far right christian extremists and gun nuts in rural parts of the states, especially in the era of Trump, would be very painful.

I guess I'll hold off a little while longer on buying a home...

Movie industry follows the tax incentives. It cares nothing about place. As soon as another place offers a better deal or the incentives dry up in Georgia, those jobs are gone. Additionally, while the incentives can provide a temporary boost in local economy, they can also cause a larger drain on local resources such as education funding.

https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/upl...kingEconomicDevelopment_Feb25LoRes-1.pdf
“tax credits to lure film productions that offer a momentary boost at best. At worst, the prevalent
use of tax incentives, coupled with multiple separate taxing jurisdictions in a region, pit jurisdictions against one another in ways that erode value in the economy and drain precious resources away from the people and assets that matter.”

Wrong.

Quote:
...When the Georgia legislature passed a religious freedom bill in 2016, studios including Disney and Marvel threatened to boycott the state before Deal vetoed the bill. Deal, a Republican, can’t seek reelection due to term limits.

“If we pass a law in Georgia that legalizes discrimination against the LGBTQ community, our tax incentives will be nonexistent, because no one is going to film in a state that legalizes discrimination,” Abrams told Variety. “If there is any doubt, look at what happened in North Carolina. Look at what happened in Indiana. Look at what is ongoing in Mississippi,” she added, referring to other states that faced an exodus of business over discriminatory laws...

...For Hollywood, the optics are significant, and for Disney, particularly so. Losing Marvel at Pinewood would be a major issue for Georgia filming, if it happened...”

There is no real evidence the film industry is going away. Georgia didn't rank #1 in money earned at the box office last year but that could be pure luck. That more top grossing films happened to be filmed in Canada is not necessarily an indictment on Georgia. Canada pioneered tax incentives to lure filming way back in the 1990's but they NEVER ranked #1 until last year. Tax incentives aren't the end all and be all. The film industry by all accounts is still going strong in Georgia. 2017 set a record for shows and movies being filmed in the state. I too worry about the tax incentives. However, it is important to note that the U.K. hands out more film tax incentives than anyone else.

As for Amazon 2.0, I doubted it would come to Georgia. I have several reasons for thinking it, but it isn't important. I just feel they will choose DC or NYC. Not that it will make any difference much to metro Atlanta, which is gaining many new jobs and big time names like Mercedes, Porsche, etc. The metro is by any measure roaring.

You have to look at the big picture...some of the states lowered their tax incentives, for example Louisiana. Therefore there is more that Georgia would be able to film. There is a lot filming that’s moved back and is moving to California because California finally increased in tax incentives. Marvel itself is filming its first movie in California in I believe it’s 5 or 6 years. Georgia is number one in tax incentives. A whopping 800 million, while California is only 350 million. It’s embarrassing we give that much for starters and still have shows leaving going back California.

Kemp is FOAMING AT THE MOUTH, like a rabid animal to sign a RFRA bill to reward his voting base. People who voted for this moron do not realize what damage he is capable of....If Atlanta suffers so does the rest of the state....

Atlanta was never a contender, just a participant. Amazon wanted to know if they made the right choice with NoVa (I think they knew a year ago already) by letting everyone else throw an offer on the table. Atlanta will be fine without Amazon and will keep on growing like wildfire anyway.
