In this case they flat out said it was due to demand. Same thing that BA said when they pulled LHR
Here at YCG we are wishing Westjet in some form would come in and perhaps takeover the Castlegar Calgary route and leave the Vancouver flights to AC Express. But we need a plane with the technology to land in poorer conditions to help us shake the "Cancelgar" moniker.

Until about 18 months ago, there were 2 Super Elites and 5 Elites based in Red Deer and using the service. Then 1 Super Elite and 1-2 Elites left RD for better connectivity cities like YEG and YYC. This made the service even more unprofitable.

I also have a bunch of contacts that live in RD but fly out of YYC at their employers requirement. The employers were having a hard time paying for the extra cost of the YQF-YYC leg.

Looks like HU has upped its equipment for many of its flights in July to the larger 333.

I understand this, but would be curious to know the actual difference in bottom line to the employer once they pay mileage and parking for their employees to drive to YYC. Also indicates they do not value their employee's time much if they are okay with burning 2-3 hours of their day every time they take a trip.

I've no idea of cost of the extra segment vs. mileage/parking, but I imagine it would be rare to save much, if any time by flying out of YQF; with a drive time of 1:17 (says Google) between the 2 airports, that gets eaten up in a real hurry by connection time.

Red Deer is one of those places where it’s caught beteeen a rock and a hard place... still far enough away for some people who would rather just be dropped off and then no hastle connecting in YYC versus driving directly to YYC. But probably not that great from an airline’s economics view point.

It just doesn’t seem far enough away from YYC to pull enough people out of their cars to make it work.

Not sure if they’d be able to fill enough seats on Westjet Link’s 34 seat SAABS to make it viable.

And speaking of Red Deer..... Just found out I’m hardly going to have any Alberta relatives left. Even my cousins in Red Deer (formerly from the Capital) are moving out to the coast later this year. My anecdotal two cents... They’ve always just driven to Calgary to catch flights.

Now, using Red Deer for an ULCC would be great. But it is chicken and egg - would need an expanded terminal and parking for it but they must have a strategy. Red Deer to Hamilton they may be able to drive the cost down a lot.

any indication on how well the loads to YQB are? I’m hoping they keep it around permanently, even if just on a seasonal basis.

Westjet’s domestic network from YYC has reached very impressive in my books.

I believe YQB makes 10 nonstop destinations from YYC east of Manitoba?

Without getting too analytical I am assuming there wouldn’t be any markets left that could handle mainline nonstop flights from YYC. YYC is now connected to every metro area > 250,000 people.

Perhaps this will kill Air North in Alberta.

The YYC - YXY O&D market quite small compared to YVR.... This will depend on a lot of transfer feed and yeah pulls pax away from Air North most likely.

HU celebrating the 2 year anniversary of its YYC run in true PEK style by being 4 hours late.

Also on closer look, it appears they will be running the larger A330-300 for the whole month of July (except the 31st). I guess they needed extra space for all that bamboo they’re transporting for the pandas.

No matter why the equipment change, I’m digging the drop in fares though with the extra capacity.

Yes a lot of the times fleet utilisation does not mean anything.

So hard to figure out what’s going on in the background of Chinese carriers.

*****

May figures released and they are pretty damn good.

http://www.yyc.com/en-us/media/factsfigures/passengerstatistics.aspx

Overall up 7% and up over 91,000 passengers compared to May 2017.

Solid increases across all three sectors.

I’m still perplexed by the continuation of long-haul international scaling back at YYC. International grew by 8.3% but that’s mainly due to WS increased sun flying and MEX (sort of included in sun flying). Due to the low base for international the increase is less than 10,000 pax.

The types of managerial and executives that live in Red Deer and have jobs that require travel usually also have been the recipients of priomotions and job offers to move to the bigger city. So these same types usual have to do a compromise with their employer to remain in Red Deer for personal/family reasons.

So when the employer allows for the job to remain in Red Deer, it also follows the same person doesn’t charge for mileage to/from YYC. Especially with the mileage charge being around $275. For reference, the round trip charge to my employer for a trip from NW Calgary (just off Stoney) to Edgar Industrial in North Red Deer was $305 at 54 cents per km.

Granted the exec/MGR living in RD when they should really be in Calgary or another major city is rare occurance. More common for RD is the manager/executive having a company car or truck. In this case the marginal cost of requiring employee to drive to YYc is $40-60 in gas.

A lot of the reduced international demand is high value frequent flyers that were previously attached to international energy companies such as Total SA, Chevron, Apache, Statoil, etc have left town. Other international oil companies have heavily scaled back operations. A city doesn’t get to 30% office space vacancy rate without also having a depressed international premium air travel sector.

I travel domestically around China quite frequently for work and people sometimes ask me why I take the HSR over the plane even when the train trip is considerably longer time wise than flying is. This is why - Chinese airports are notoriously delayed, while the train is almost always on time.

That being said, my last few times flying out of PVG have been pretty good - it seems the delays now are nowhere near as bad as I've experienced in the past.

Probably doesn’t help that they are very busy too. I remember the last time I flew out of PEK we pushed back relatively on time, but ended up waiting in line to take off for more than an hour and half.

Has WS80 always shown up on the fids twice? One displaying YHZ and the other displaying CDG.

Yeah they haven't fixed it yet. On the arrival board it always shows as directly from CDG, and then the same number with YHZ may or may not show.
Is there not enough space for it to display "Halifax/Paris"? I feel like they've had flights listed like this on the fids before.

Excited for the potential added AA service. I can also see mainline returning to DFW next year as well now that WS is no longer on that route. Be also nice to see an extended ORD run next year too.

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit:

1) PHX is one of YYC’s largest transborder O&D markets
2) AA still maintaining a decent sized hub there
3) WS and AA’s lovefest has broken up... no codeshare at all
