I would have been OK with the NDPs spending if it had produced results. If our healthcare, education, public transit, etc were in tip-top shape. But spending all that money and having basically nothing to show for it, it's a disaster. Our public services are still among the very worst in the country.

I feel like their justification made sense though. We had more hospitals per capita then any other major city. With resources stretched over those ER, it makes it easier for one to become overwhelmed quicker. If other major cities are able to have better patient outcomes with less ER's, that tells me the number of ER's isn't the problem. Since the initial change we've already seen slight improvements in wait times. My dad presented at St. B a couple months back and I was surprised at how well he was moved through. I suggest we give the PC the benefit of the doubt and wait to see if the numbers improve over the long haul. Something had to change.

Maybe this is a discussion for another thread. But what ER's will remain? St. B, HSC and Grace?

So basically everyone from northeast/southeast Winnipeg will go to St. B. West to grace and core/north to HSC. Hopefully they can handle the load. Are their any renovations to the buildings occurring? Seems there was already a shortage of beds. Now diverting even more people to those hospitals would exacerbate the problem without an expansion. Which then potentially leaves empty beds at the Hospitals/ER's that have closed.

Seems like things are going okay for now. The provinces timelines were a bit aggressive and they've delayed some closing. Again, we'll see how it goes.

Yup, Grace just opened its renovated ER and Concordia ER won't close until St. B's ER is renovated by Juneish 2019.

people need to stop going to ER for bad colds, cuts, minor injuries, go to the other clinics for those.

this is very true, my sister in law was one of those people who would take her family to the ER for any and everything.

HSC, SBH and GRH are the 3 hospitals with an MRI so they were chosen to be the designated ER locations.

Concordia, is pretty much a glorified walk in clinic. So there will be 3 walkin clinics at the intersection of Molson and Concordia.

That's the problem in a nutshell. With the NDP in power, it's like a family living off their credit card. Everything seems great until the piper has to be paid. God forbid if the Conservatives did not win the last election as Manitoba was well on it's way to becoming Canada's version of Greece. If people here complain that austerity measures have been taken in Manitoba to curb our debt, they should examine what happened in Greece.

Unfortunately, the NDP creates a cycle of dependency in this province by ensuring there is a bloated government bureaucracy and overly union friendly legislation that helps to keep business away from Manitoba. They like to ensure there are just enough businesses here so that the taxes they pay, along with those of non-government workers, will keep the operation of government going. However, they do not want a business friendly environment which would create more non-government jobs as that in turn reduces the voting power base of all the government employees that they rely on.

The Conservatives are not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but they are the only ones willing to tackle the debt issue and that is a difficult thing to do in a province where so many have become dependent on government for their livelihood. The NDP weren't too bad when Gary Doer was premier as he was pragmatic in governing but once he was gone the NDP returned to being dogmatic in nature. In some ways, a change of government in Manitoba from NDP to Conservative is akin to a drug addict wanting to get clean. However, acknowledging that you need help and then having to live through the 'getting clean' stage are two different things. It's painful to work your way through in order to get clean but then you must be willing to stay clean and not return to your old ways once you are clean.

Concordia being local to me. More recently I went there for a broken arm and broken foot. Wife gone there for bell's palsy (which looks like a stroke). Grandpa died there. Among numerous other things over the course of our lives. Not just with a cold (which is silly).

Anywho, will be heading to St. b from now on I guess.

Exactly

As many have mentioned it's only extremes here – NDP spend like crazy and have nothing to show for it. PC cut like crazy and (this time around it's too early to say yet) results in huge drops in service often. It's almost like everyone is coming to a consensus that we need to be in the middle, which would be LIBERAL, but for whatever reason they've always just been an afterthought mess here.

That was a huge debate – it was always coming down because they wanted a new building with a parking lot in front. The excuse was that people kept crashing into the building... Rather than the city fixing the issue with the intersection design, they just bent over and allowed it.

You can see the new building behind the old one, already built. This is going to become their parking lot.

I would generally agree with you that a liberal government would be a happy medium. Unfortunately the modern Liberal has become very left wing and comparable to the NDP.

It's really too bad that the site feels like a regression with that parking lot.

The Manitoba Liberals have nothing like the links to unions and what we might call the dyed-in-the-wool left in the way that the NDP does.

You would have to be ideologically aligned with someone like Ezra Levant to consider the Manitoba Liberals a far left party.

Wouldn't agree there. There's a wide range in Liberals between federal level and all the provinces. Capital-L Liberals tend to take the socially progressive nature of the left, but are much generally more fiscally conservative than NDP.

The lowercase-l liberal notion is something we hear a lot in the media from the US, and that has recently been much more left leaning (even though both parties have their own splits), which is the problem with a 2-party system.

I know what you're saying but I feel the Liberals of the early 2000's were more centre left while Trudeaus Liberals have proven to be very Left even when it comes to fiscal responsibility. The Manitoba Liberals during the last election proved themselves to be similar to that as well, which was why they weren't able to capitalize on such a weak NDP.

The late 90s/early/mid 2000s liberals were more centre right if anything...especially from a fiscal standpoint. The most significant reduction/elimination in the deficit and reduction of the national debt occurred under Chretien's leadership.

Why? Because they've been running deficits? So did Harper.

Harper's deficits were forced on him while in a minority government and financial crisis which were later balanced with minor surpluses.

The current government appears to be spending with little accountability or results as growth has been stagnant. At the same time increasing taxes(Carbon Tax).

Sorry, I have a hard time not getting the last word. Looking out my window and I don't see any construction going on. How about you?

A couple old single detached homes on my street have recently been bought to be torn down and subdivided to make way for 2 homes. I'm thinking they will be two single detached homes but I'm unsure. Is this really common now?

It might be becoming more common now here, I used to see it all the time out west

It's done wonders to rejuvenate aging neighbourhoods in Calgary
