wasn't saying it was. and wouldn't say edmonton is either..

from what I saw didn't seems like winnipeg had as many patches of dead blocks as edmonton in the core (could have missed some? ) while edmonton has a lot more in the new tower department

again, hard to weigh one over the other imo..

In my opinion one could add the best of Winnipeg and the best of Halifax put together and it would still not be half of what downtown Edmonton has to offer even without the ice district. I would consider Edmonton closer to Calgary than it is to Winnipeg or Halifax. I have lived in all 4 cities at one time although Winnipeg very briefly.

Bingo. This is my hope as well. New and affordable housing (but not sub-market) will be great, especially in this relatively hidden spot. That said, I do not have any aspersions to commie-blocks. It's only a problem when they get too tower-in-the-park design that it is a problem.

Oh my god, this is even more comical. Halifax has a very strong downtown, and it's only getting more and more vibrant. The city has the benefit of being far older and having far greater "bones" than Edmonton, but even with only a third of our population, I'd say their downtown stacks up nicely to ours. Not *as* vibrant in aggregate, but per capita, it knocks us out of the park.

Kingston was a huge surprise with its downtown, which felt no less vibrant than Downtown Edmonton on a good summer's day (ie not when there's a major festival pumping up numbers). Things are changing with the arena, but yeah, there's been some surprising Canadian cities in terms of vibrancy.

Logic, thank you. Halifax has the old world charm, but that is because of its age. Downtown Halifax is amazing, and is seeing great projects being built. Edmonton lagged for years, taking a back seat to Calgary, but most of what we are seeing being proposed now is more than acceptable. The focus now needs to be encouraging low rise fillers throughout the downtown, and the periphery.

Nothing wrong with subsidized housing. Not everyone can afford Katz's luxury sky palace condos.

Likely not nor is it necessary imo. We have more than enough under-utilized sites that can accommodate new development of varying heights. Not only that but our market can only 'sustain' so much. Look at other larger markets such as Toronto (which is almost x5 times larger than ours) and they aren't popping up too many buildings over 200m.

I'm not even talking about subsidized housing, although subsidised housing is great. Just simple basic housing.

Toronto is indeed still on a roll. We are waiting for confirmation the 80 story Alldritt Tower will proceed. What the downtown needs is several dozen low to mid rise towers.

Edmonton Motors will be shutting down its jasper avenue location . The dealership is dropping Chevrolet and opening a Cadillac only dealer in the West end

From Harrison Wolf, GM Edmonton Motors:

We are excited to make a dramatic announcement regarding Edmonton Motors Limited. This dealership has been serving Edmonton and area with quality GM Products from downtown Edmonton since 1925, always operated under the steady hand of the Wolfe family. During the last few years changes in the automotive market, Edmonton’s burgeoning downtown real estate market, and our aging facility have made it obvious that a change in location is in order for our dealership. Jasper Avenue used to be home to many Auto Dealers and was Edmonton’s “Auto Row” for decades. We are the last dealership to move from Jasper Avenue. Negotiations with our manufacturer and investigating suitable alternate locations have been ongoing for the past several years.

The increased success and popularity of Cadillac Passenger Cars, Crossovers, and SUV’s warrants that a dedicated facility be built to represent the Cadillac line-up. The Cadillac brand now deserves its own facility in Edmonton. We have started construction of a new state of the art Cadillac dealership in the city’s west end that will open in late 2018/early 2019. It will be one of the very first “Cadillac only” dealerships in Canada.

We were unsuccessful in finding a location for a new Chevrolet dealership that suited our manufacturer’s vision of the Edmonton market for Chevrolet. However, we are proud and excited to announce that our company has purchased “Westgate Chevrolet”, also known as “The Chevy Farm”, located in Edmonton’s west end. This will put all GM products, represented by the Wolfe family, in one area with Western Buick GMC, Westgate Chevrolet, and the new Cadillac dealership all in a few block radius.

All of our Chevrolet sales and service activity, including Fleet and Commercial Sales, will be moved to Westgate Chevrolet during the month of July, 2018. At the end of July, Edmonton Motors Limited will no longer be a franchised Chevrolet dealer and will continue to operate as a Cadillac and Pre-Owned Vehicle Dealer only. With Westgate Chevrolet’s superior location, modern updated facility, and the help of their great experienced staff, we will be able to offer our Chevrolet customers even better service and selection.

Edmonton Motors Limited will cease operations when the new Cadillac dealership is ready to open for business. It will be the end of an era for the downtown Edmonton automotive market.

^ If this is the one on Jasper Ave between 114 and 116 St - it's about 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 time!!!

But as this is a fair-sized car dealership, and if it gets demoed, wouldn't it end up an empty lot for God knows how long due to remediation/cleanup?

If memory serves me right I thought I heard rumblings not to long ago of a developer attempting to purchase the land where the Edmonton motors jasper ave location sits. Not sure though.

^^ Perhaps the process and timeline will be similar to what the Southpark site is undergoing on Whyte Ave? Demolition there occurred in summer 2017 and the latest expectation appears to be that construction will start in early 2019.

Hallelujah!

My condo is very close by. Even an empty lot would be preferable to the eyesore there right now of pickup trucks rusting in the elements, but developing this land, coupled with the Emerald tower and the two proposed towers on the north side of the street on 115th will do absolute wonders for what is currently the worst stretch of Jasper Avenue.

It will always reman my wish that instead of the surface LRT running along 104th, the underground line had been extended along Jasper Avenue westward of 109th street. That makes so much more long term sense to have it near a forest of residential towers, instead along a sea of retail along 104th.

Beaten up a little, but Jasper Avenue remains the spine of downtown, and redevelopment of the car dealership lands is one such lynchpin site to make Jasper Avenue vibrant once again. That said, if were thinking about living along Jasper, I'd think twice if I had to trundle 3+ long blocks to the nearest rapid transit corridor. In the end, I'd probably pick housing near Jasper Ave. and drive instead of taking transit; bus would not be an option.
