The towers are kinda like last night's Oilers vs. Blue Jackets game. To the left, we have the JW Marriott Oilers, out to an early commanding lead. To the right, the Stantec Blue Jackets.

Event Format
The pop-up is an informal drop-in event. Stop by, check out the panels, and provide your input at any time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Project team members will be available to answer questions.

Glorified commie block. A floor plate like this shouldn't be any more than 5-6 stories.

^ C'mon guys, it isn't half as bad as the 🞵🞵🞵🞵 we used to get. It has townhomes on the street which is a huge plus for families. The colour choices aren't that bad either, this looks like decent filler to me. Many people on this forum (and others) are getting infected with architectural snobinitis. Snap out of it!

I don't know anything about architecture (literally nothing). I just know that the commie block looking thing is ugly to my eyes.

It looks ugly (the material, colours etc...), but it's also ugly in form. It looks like something from the 1960's.

It really is. This type of project would be acceptable in Winnipeg, but not in Edmonton.

The satellite view makes it look like it would be right at home. Some of those other buildings are vomit inducing at best.

right... maybe winnipeg should do more of these and edmonton can do more peregrine points?

in the meantime we can wander through rossdale and dream of the forks and they can restore yet another heritage building while we demolish the replacements for our demolished heritage buildings.

poor winnipeg with its leed platinum office tower and a playoff bound hockey team doing its downtown rink proud...

Agree, for where it is, it can fit in well. It definitely is a little extreme but I'm also going to hold judgement till we know the unit price point in this building, whether purchase or rental. If prices in this building are going to be lower than the ridiculously priced stuff going up (Pearl / Hendrix) then I'm all for it. If prices aren't any different then yah it's a POS.

What's the current use of the building that the Oliver proposal is intending to replace?

All the surrounding land uses are mostly walk-ups and apt. blocks. The nearby Ansgar Villa is the same height so I don't think it is too out of place. Will be interesting to see how the bubble-house folks feel about it.

It's a dilapidated empty lot adjacent to a nice little park, the existing building in the pic is long gone

Yes, and it shows. While the design of this building is a bit bland, to liken it to the commie blocks of yore is hyperbolic at best.

Bad example. Winnipeg has long had a better architecture standard than Edmonton. My guess is it has something to do with actually having an architecture school. While we were building the Legacy, Peregrine Point, and other stucco-clad monstrosities, Winnipeg was building the Roblin Centre and Manitoba Hydro Tower. It's only in the last 5 years that Edmonton has truly caught up to Winnipeg.

FWIW, I find this proposal overall easier on the eyes than the Icons (especially their west-facing side).

LMFAO. HELL NO! Perhaps 120 years ago. Those projects you cited, yeah, all public $$$. Give me a break. Winnipeg is the stucco capital.

Cheap building, seemingly finished in black spray paint:

Sparkling beacon of renewal:

https://skyrisecities.com/news/2016/11/hyatt-place-hotel-opens-edmonton

There are not too many more options to compare in Winnipeg, as not much has happened there in decades.

Cities everywhere are envious over the superior design standards in Winnipeg:

What about this looker? Mayor Don can only dream of having something like this built downtown:

lol calm down there. All cities have their fair share of 🞵🞵🞵🞵. But what Edmonton lacked until recently was the higher quality projects like what I cited. The Hyatt in Edmonton is a very recent structure and points to what I already said -- the bar has been raised here in the last several years. Whether the money came publicly or privately doesn't actually matter, what matters is how the buildings end up looking. I'll take the ALT Hotel on Portage over Peregrine Point anyday tbh.

Sorry, but Winnipeg is my hometown, and it is by no means a leader in architecture. 100 years ago, it was. Peregrine Point is mediocre at best, but at least it is tucked away, and not on a main thoroughfare. I will take Symphony tower over anything recently built in Winnipeg. Of course, not much has been built in downtown Winnipeg recently.

Um, Halifax has more going on downtown than Winnipeg. Edmonton is doing just fine, especially considering the economic downturn.
