Sure, if you want a fence for several kilometres.

If they're smart, the station box will lie under Broadway between Oak and Laurel and they'll have exits at both ends of the station - one near Broadway and one near Laurel.

But given how they've cheapened out on access points for all the existing stations, especially the Canada Line, the smart move doesn't seem all that likely to me.

If they basically follow University Blvd it means the train will be travelling through a golf course before getting to the populated university grounds. I'm pretty sure they'd do cut and cover down the center median.

Seconded for Jericho. Blanca's an iffier choice; it might be better transit-wise, but it isn't as commercially active or redevelop-able as the Safeway block. TransLink can always move the bus loop.

The naming convention seems to be "landmark plus street" (Oakridge-41st, VCC-Clark, etc) so they'll likely call it "VGH-Oak" or "VGH-Broadway" or something.

There are faculty, and other professional people of all stripes working and living out there; doctors, teachers, researchers, you name it; and their lives often dictate the need to travel
in and out of Vancouver. With bus connections to Arbutus would be fine for a decade or more to come, but it seems ultimately there'll be a call for rrt all the way.

Don't see the problem with the guideways, they makes the place look urban, just like the soon-to-be-former viaducts. Regardless, SkyTrain to UBC appears to be a question of "when," not "if."

The golfers can suck it up; SkyTrain, chirping birds, people breathing too loudly, they've got nobody to blame for their shitty downswing and subsequent double bogey but themselves.

If they want to preserve the median, TransLink could close off the northbound or southbound side and run it down there - traffic's pretty light even at rush hour.

Sorry, an Arbutus station on the SE corner? No way, that plaza's not nearly big enough for an Canada Line-sized entrance; it's got to be the Shell on the NW or the Rogers/Fido store on the NE.

Doesn't the city own the Rogers/Fido store (and almost every property on the east side along Arbutus down to 5th Avenue)

That's what we were thinking a couple years ago when they said it wouldn't be at 988 Broadway.

Makes sense to have an entrance at Laurel and another at the former Scotiabank. It'll be a busy station.

Do they? AFAIK, they only bought the Greenway - the properties beside it are private and they can only rezone them.

"you have to think of these infrastructure assets as 50 to 100 year assets."

better mean 100M platforms. even if they are truncated to 80M with fake walls at the platform ends when line opens

easier to knock out the fake walls in a few decades, rather than re-dig open pits on broadway to extend every "new" station

wanna guess how often will the train be 'accidentally' hit by golf balls as it glides by?

I believe that trofirhen's referring to the West 10th stretch. Still a bad idea, but not as bad as Broadway or Surrey.

Fifty bucks says the whole course gets rezoned for condos if they make a habit of it. The University ain't playing around with development.

I wonder how they will turn the bus around for the 99 assuming it moves to Arbutus station.

How’s that going to work? Is it like the Evergreen through Port Moody?

Just suggesting that if they ever put a guideway through a golf course they'd could erect a shell around it to protect trains from errant balls.

Previously discussed here and here. Nothing official yet, so everybody's just sitting around brainstorming.

the commuter trains in Chicago had heavy-duty wire mesh over the train windows to prevent rocks and larger boulders cracking or breaking them when running past the projects

looked f'n ugly, but it was un-nerving to be taking the train and hear a volley of rocks hitting the train (some quite loud - aka large rocks) as the train passed the areas that went thru "urban renewal" in the 50's and 60's

some train cars looked like cheap aluminum siding after a hail storm with all the pock-marks

turn in from broadway, unload, load, then exit via 12th ave or 16th back to UBC

or the reverse direction
