Sadly, despite the cheer leading over the growth in Winnipeg, there ain't much going on construction wise to talk about.

There are only 4 towers under construction downtown (if you could the site prep for 300 main), after all.

The difference is, there's no one in Winnipeg taking pictures of the construction actually going on. I can't be there for more than a day at a time right now, but when that changes, I may just start.

We could always discuss the two terminal stations that MB hydro are upgrading in St. Vital on Lag and the other on Mc.Phillips by the casino. It would tie in both the Hydro and construction topics here.

I think that it stems a bit from the mentality of the city/province. "Game-changing" proposals/under-construction projects that are pretty standard anywhere else; kinda hard to rile up the crowd with projects like that.

Which other cities the size of Winnipeg have more construction going on?

Well, I live 300 Kms away - so that could be difficult.

Winnipeg has actually been one of the fastest growing cities in the county (both economically and in population over the last few years). A couple of decades ago it barely grew at all.

It's not necessarily about quantity, it's about quality.

Hamilton is slaying right now, and that city is pretty much the same population.

Mississauga has got some good things going on as well, and again, a similar population.

Ottawa, slightly larger, has got some real game-changing projects in the pipeline.

Generally Ontario, and especially the Golden Horseshoe area like the Waterloo region. But BC and AB hold up in some cities that are actually smaller than Winnipeg. With the BC cities, most of their construction projects would be about adding vibrancy to their city centres like Kelowna.

Sorry to counter your observations but:

Hamilton has been probably more stagnant than Winnipeg so I say good on them.

Mississauga has a metro region of 6 million people - hardly comparable.

Ottawa is closer to twice the size of Winnipeg so not really fair. Essentially the same as comparing Calgary and Edmonton to Winnipeg.

^ Mississauga basically IS Toronto... you can't compare Winnipeg with that. Even Hamilton is to some extent riding Toronto's coattails.

I'm all for an honest assessment of Winnipeg but let's compare apples to apples here.

The only comparison that matters to me is how Winnipeg is doing now versus the recent past. I like the path we are on very much.

I do not think Ottawa is out of the equation; without Gatineau, it is closer to Winnipeg.

That "recent past" was due to complacency, lack of vision, and I would argue not looking at what other cities are doing.

Part of what will help downtown IMO is excluding it (and certain other neighborhoods) from the growth tax. If Bowman (and any future municipal government) is smart, this will be permanent, not temporary.
