Or alternatively, we would have had a great development done by locals who knew the market and didn't depend on whoring out much of the city to Chinese money. There are tales from the early Concord buildings that would make your toes curl, but I can't share those.

Edited to add: this discussion really belong s in another thread.

That's one opinion. Conventional wisdom though seems to be "Podunk amusement park". I suppose you can improve affordability by building next to a roller coaster.

Vancouver might have been a very different city or, at least, have a very different downtown, had it not been for a series of political battles and ultimate outcomes within the provincial government over the sale of the former Expo lands. I worked in the Premier’s Office between 1986 and 1988, when the decision was made to sell the lands to Li Ka-shing’s Hutchison Whampoa Company of Hong Kong.

That decision was a VERY controversial one within the Vander Zalm government. Few will remember that the Premier was very much in favour of selling the lands to a local group– primarily led by the late Peter Toigo and backed by a few financiers, including the late Jack Poole. Their plan for the site was much less ambitious than what we see there today and they included a permanent amusement park on a large portion of the site.

Most at BCDC were skeptical of the ability of the Toigo consortium’s ability to execute a development and strongly resisted the Premier’s intervention.

Which discussion is this? a nuanced history of Vancouver development and internationalism? or how Chinese like to live in garbage-strewn buildings?

the renaming doesn't mean it has anything to do with the fact it is a "Trump" branded tower. it could always be that when you google "trump tower Toronto" every bad thing about the building comes up. change the name to "abs tower Toronto" and now there isn't too much about it going on. many instances of this happening where things are renamed/branded to become "new" and shed off the negatives of before.

maybe it is because its the Trump name, or it could be more then that. it wouldn't be unheard of.

The 80% unsold units? It'll be a tough sell in any case. It's downright impossible with Trump as your marketing.

Let's keep comments on this thread to the project itself.

Can we please know who on the moderator team has changed the thread title? I don't think a person expressing his/her political opinions through childish acts like this should be a moderator on this forum. Let's keep things neutral, please.

His real surname name is Trump and always has been. His grandfather changed the name well over 100 years ago .

**edit apparently that was wrong. The name was changed 300 to 400 years ago.

Was the name of this project ever Vancouver's Turn? Not sure if it was back when Ritz-Carlton was still involved, but let's change it to simply:

Trump Tower | 188M | 63 Fl | Completed

I think 63 is the real number of levels and not 67, correct?

I have changed it back, the log doesn't show who made the change but it can only be a handful of people on this board. If discovered that person will be spoken too. I concur we've tried our best to remove politics from this thread and this type of action is undesired.

It's the biggest tower ever and everyone knows it. I served it with a huge piece of chocolate cake, it's tremendous. Bigly.

Haven't seen the lighting feature on for months now. Too many complaints?
