WTC = a building or series of that houses all the facilities associated with global commerce, international trade. Also, it must be registered to have that title.

Who pays for it? What facilities are required for global commerce? It all sounds a bit fishy to me. I am picturing a room with a huge world map on the wall. Maybe flanked by some foreign flags on sticks. And a series of clocks labelled "New York", "London", "Cairo", etc. But I'm a bit hazy about what would be happening in the room.

More like a Chamber of Commerce or Rotary Club for businesses and trade groups that have some sort of international dimension. The name has some cachet so they license it for use by property developers... the eight-storey office building in Saskatoon becomes a little more marketable with a name like World Trade Centre as opposed to something like Conexus Credit Union Place.

Winnipeg already has a WTC situated in the old St. Boniface City Hall, which is not altogether surprising given that their CEO has a background in Francophone specific trade initiatives... I doubt the site search went west of Tache.

Yeah, it kind of conjures up images of Wall Street and Big Business, but from what I can tell it's not a whole lot more than some kind of networking group with an awesome name.

Yeah, it's "We're with you (for a little while longer until Bell forces us to drop the MTS moniker)".

^ if it's true, it's not likely the Harvard site to the south. Would be where that patio is. They would likely face an uphill battle getting a permit to demolish the building.

Thanks for the tidbit lilwayne. It would be awesome if true... the open spaces on the NW and SW corners at Main and McDermot really detract from an otherwise great streetscape from McDermot to Bannatyne.

The location certainly seems marketable when it comes to condos... it's basically at Portage and Main, but just a stone's throw from all the good stuff in the Exchange District.

That's demolishing. It's a fully protected heritage building. Grade two. It can't be demolished. Mitchell Copp wasn't.

Hopefully it's true. I've heard Harvard wasn't interested in selling that lot. Would be great though. It's the worst parking lot in the city by a mile.

Honestly. I'd be happy with a six storey building there. Just get rid of that brutal gravel parking lot. It makes me crazy. Fingers crossed.

That is terrific news. If there is such a thing as a tipping point, I think downtown Winnipeg has reached it. Not to open a can of worms but I think as well that opening Portage and Main makes this type of investment much more feasible.

If we are getting a new high rise at that site at some point in the future, I hope it "blends in" with the other buildings at Portage and Main. As much as I'd like the city's tallest to be at Portage and Main, the cluster of high rise buildings there are aesthetically pleasing from all directions, so something too tall might take away from that.
