So that leaves stucco and aluminum siding as the main facade materials you'll find in Edmonton. The aluminum siding on some of the new houses is done quite well though.

I find the roofs on new Alberta houses to be more atchitectural than in Ontario. Good mix of clay tiles, metal tiles, lumber tiles throughout the neighbourhoods. Compared to el-cheapo tiles used in most new Ontario subdivisions. And a lot more interesting roof pitches used as well in the newer houses as well.

You guys actually get aluminum? Our new suburbs are basically 100% vinyl with faux stone and wood shingles as accents. The more expensive home will have hardieboard instead of vinyl. Or a mix of both.

The cheapo metal roof, the balcony-like bars....the weird and fugly massing, the Soviet-turret-tower fitted with the most eclectic and "modern" pieces of metal to make a clockface...

Even the street interaction looks like a botch job...god. I'd rather have a gas station then that thing...

Their idea of historical preservation was to keep the original clock mechanism and house it inside the new monster. At least Clockzilla never cannibalized a beautiful old building. That makes this one twice as ugly!

There's something about that NZ example that's just so bad it's almost... good? I feel like the southern hemisphere anglo countries have their unique take on a kind of neo-brutalist architecture. The clocktower may stand out but I've seen somewhat similar stuff in pics from NZ, Australia and South Africa.

According to the planning rules there you can build right up to the lot line, but if you want to have windows you need to add a setback for fire safety, even if the building next door is much shorter. The lots and blocks there are small, and it is common for developers to choose to go right to the lot line even if that means foregoing windows on multiple sides of the building.

Ah, OK, so it's not just literally a red cube, there are windows on the other sides? That's fine. I thought maybe it was some sort of giant windowless telecom box.

I actually like these kinds of buildings that are designed with abutting neighbours in mind. It's a proper built form for an urban area as opposed to standalone towers that will always be isolated.
