There is a huge amount of reno work to be done there, as I don't expect it will go in any direction but up.

BTW, having these types of areas look grungy isn't just a Toronto thing. You see it in most Canadian cities.
It's definitely not as rundown/grungy as it used to be. Every city has it. Most older American cities have several times the level of abandonment. The city isn't that flush with cash as it deals with incredible growing pains (they'll pay off years from now) on top of aging infrastructure. That said, the drive from Billy Bishop to Union is seeing intense redevelopment but, I don't know anyone that would call it rundown compared to other parts of the city.

My mistake. I was googling Edmonton stucco and it came up. I guess it's an Edmonton stucco company. Either way it's fugly.

Nelson New Zealand's Civic House could join in on the fight as well.

^ Holy moses. That thing looks like it got a bad makeover in the 80s which didn't help things any.

Interesting to know that our cousins in NZ can do ugly at least as well as we do in Canada. Maybe better ...

Definitely better. It looks like it should be one of the buildings in that old CGI show Reboot, based on computer chips and the like.

At first glance I assumed the clock tower was under repair and covered in scaffolding.

Edit: I think Clockzilla and Mecclocky have both been unseated as ugliest clocktower on earth. How did you find this monstrosity? Imagine it without that banner. Just a naked shaft...

It's rare to find a brick house in Edmonton, and the ones you do find are 70+ years old. New build brick homes are basically non-existent, aside from the occasional feature wall on one side of the house.

Supposedly the reason is that there just isn't a lot of local supply??

So that leaves stucco and aluminum siding as the main facade materials you'll find in Edmonton. The aluminum siding on some of the new houses is done quite well though.

I find the roofs on new Alberta houses to be more atchitectural than in Ontario. Good mix of clay tiles, metal tiles, lumber tiles throughout the neighbourhoods. Compared to el-cheapo tiles used in most new Ontario subdivisions. And a lot more interesting roof pitches used as well in the newer houses as well.
