[QUOTE=Urban recluse;7770249]SkyCity? LOL. The WAG expansion is great, but will not result in anything else.

we built up to a point convinced government to invest in grants for it now lets see if we can grow the economy to keep it going

this is a pipe dream but would love to see the U of M program branch off and have a Manitoba School of Art open in the Bay building with Arch and the Fine Arts programs included.

I'd love if Hydro allowed the blank walls to become part of Mural Fest, or at least let it get some great street art on it.

I can't imagine how unleashing mural artists on that wall would lead in any way to an improvement... if anything it would likely be a big step in the other direction.

Whats the black part on the wall?

I think the dark portion is brick while the lighter portion is limestone.

^^^ It looks really nice at night though. They did a good job with changing LED lighting.

Murals always scream to me how disadvantaged an area is. But don't worry, that nice long blank wall will be a tagger's dream.

Hydro will probably be good about cleaning the wall up, they're a good corporate citizen from that standpoint.

I agree, murals are the kind of thing that you expect in dodgy troubled areas. Belfast during the troubles was full of them. Maybe I'm being a wet blanket but I'd easily say that 95% or more of Winnipeg's are somewhere between bad to terrible.

Bang on, wall murals are cheesy and crass, kind of like tattoos!

Im certainly no proponent of tatoos but I think wall murals can he pretty awesome. One of my favorite cities in the world is Valparaiso in chile which is a seemingly endless series of wall murals. Come to think of it all the coastal cities I visited there employed wall murals heavily and the effect was awesome. I don't think that they belong everywhere but it does help liven up a big blank wall.

There have been some really great murals going up in this city recently. The murals on the Vineyard, for example, are excellent. We're past the phase of putting oxe carts or Cindy Klassen on everything.

Agreed, check out the instagram page of "synonymartconsultation" to see some of the nice and tasteful murals that they have done in the city. I do think that a lot of the older murals in the city are quite bad though.

Is that what the black part is? It looks like a very large LED panel.

You read my mind... this thing probably gives children nightmares

They definitely are getting better, though... I actually like this one in the Exchange:

sources: themuralsofwinnipeg.com

That said, it's fine to put a mural on a cinder block wall on an alley. It would be an affront to put one right on Adelaide and Notre Dame on a wall that actually has some quality materials. Next time Hydro builds a substation, they'd just cheap out with cinder block or metal siding and hire a kid to throw up a mural... it's a bad precedent.
