Portage and Memorial
Portage and Vaughan
Portage and Donald
McDermot and Albert
Graham and Edmonton

All pretty solid intersections with plenty of pedestrian activity...

Does this qualify as Innovation Alley? Just curious.

Portage & Memorial: Other than Stella's...?
Portage & Vaughan: Tim Horton's
Portage & Donald: getting warmer.

The point is that none of them resemble downtown Halifax: you walk around and pass a freakin lot of pubs, and lot more retail on narrow streets.

^ They are there, just not all laid out in a row like in Halifax. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see some continuous strips, but there's a difference between not having strips and not having the various shops and amenities in the first place.

PS - Don't tell me you've forgotten about The Bay's existence

Sporadic indeed, but I think overall, there truly is not enough based on the downtown population.

The direction has been for things to be getting better. It's hard to complain when things are getting better.

An alternate universe where U of M stayed and expanded downtown would be very interesting to observe. While it's mentioned often, I think there may be some downsides that we never think of:

- Due to it's sheer size, there may have been pressures to tear down a lot of the old buildings in the area
- U of M's building boom may have taken place during a time when a sprawling campus was seen as the way of the future, further reducing density downtown
- An extra 30,000 people downtown everyday may have created a push for more parking, further taking out existing development
- Further to that last point, the extra congestion in terms of traffic (60s era, of course) may have been a trigger to build more of the freeway network into downtown

I've always thought that a U of M in either Riverview or Norwood Flats would be an interesting scenario.

I don't think anything negative would have come from its continued existence. If anything, west of Osborne may have been razed to allow for the construction of additional buildings, and that would be acceptable in my opinion.

Good points. It may have ended up turning vast swathes of the West End into a parking lot. Then again, students do tend to use transit, and a downtown location would only make that easier. The University also wouldn't have had the dubious benefit of owning a vast swathe of vacant land to do with as it pleased, so its horizontal expansion would have likely been more constrained.

And who knows, while it may have been the trigger to build downtown freeways, it may also have been the trigger to build the Wilson Subway system.

One alternate location I like is their second location: The current Asper campus. That would have made for a pretty nice University location, between the edge of the city proper and Assiniboine Park.

The other consideration is the proximity to the U of W. Would both have existed so close to each other?

Lots of negativity here

Downtown has improved significantly in last 10 years and once true north.. 300 main.. Sky city?... Wag expansion and these red river projects are complete it'll look even more revitalized.. I think ppl are underestimating the effect that these major projects are going make in overall perception of dt these are game changers

SkyCity? LOL. The WAG expansion is great, but will not result in anything else.

If the Bay building was being redeveloped, then I would be pleased.

the U of M was basically an agriculture faculty historically, with other stuff attached. there is a reason it is in the sticks. that is not to say certain faculties couldn't be downtown.
