IMO, I think that the design and lighting at night, along with how it appears and proportions is good for Dallas. It keeps that radiant energy that is propagated with the surrounding towers, yet doesn't overshadow it. Its not uber flashy, but flashy enough to have that high energy look to it, yet elegant enough to blend into the fabric of downtown.

Right amount of bulk to it, and without a cheesy spire that somehow draws the eye from the whole CBD.

Over extravagant wouldn't look good, but Foster did a good job on this one.

It being a cylinder is precisely what I'm objecting to. A cylinder-shaped tower is a dated, half-assed design for a "signature" tower. Compare this 1970s turd to what's happening architecturally throughout the World right now. Compare it to any number of SOM or Pelli projects, for example. Check out the Guiyang World Trade Center, Pertamina Energy Tower, 35 Hudson Yards, Salesforce Tower, White Magnolia Plaza, etc...

At least let it bow out in the middle or make it oval...make SOME effort, Foster. Tianjin Global Financial Center isn't that different, but it's also clear how much more thought went into its design.

The design certainly needs some more refining for a polished look, but this certainly brings Dallas' skyline out of the 20th century and into the 21st century.

I read that the new building to be built by Perot could be up to 1,100 ft tall. If this is correct, how many stories is that?

I love the facade on that new Foster tower, but I've never been a fan of cylindrical towers. I don't mind rounded ones, but cylindrical towers are on the same level of boring as square ones are. The facade and crown is the only thing it has going for it. A tower of that shape would be ok if it were shorter, but that thing is going to stand out in a major way. You don't want your skyline to be defined by a building that is so one dimensional.

I have mixed feelings. I just hope it comes to fruition in a major way.. No doubt the design will be tweaked. Hoping the height limits can be passed by the city.

Irving breaks ground on convention center hotel as entertainment district takes shape

One of the final pieces in a long-term plan for an Irving entertainment district will be set in motion Monday with the groundbreaking for a convention center hotel.

The Westin Irving Convention Center Las Colinas hotel, at 400 W. Las Colinas Blvd., will hold 350 guest rooms. It represents the "crowning piece in Irving's vision for a distinctive, pedestrian-friendly visitors district," the city said.

I like the round look on this Foster tower, what makes it stand out is the facade and the atriums. The crown atrium itself is equivalent to eight floors in height, the lower two are four floors each. At the base not shown would be yet another atrium. Since the tower will be on a small parcel area, my take is that Perot wants this tower to minimize space and floors to at least be the city's next tallest and in the state is not out of the question. If you noticed the first render a wide tower of about fifty floors would have a lot of floor space, but wouldn't be high enough to significantly change the skyline. Initially Perot said that it would be the next gateway to downtown.

Three-story building with restaurants, rooftop patios, event center planned for old downtown Frisco

A developer is planning a three-story building in old downtown Frisco that will include two rooftop patios, a rooftop park, restaurants, and an event center as well as retail and office space.

“We’re trying to create the rebirth of downtown, where people can go eat, shop and stay,” Churchman said.

Churchman said his focus on this project is to maintain historical downtown Frisco.

“With the bigger projects happening along the Dallas North Tollway, sometimes we forget what started this city and [what started it is] right here in old downtown Frisco,” Churchman said.

He is set to present the downtown project to the Frisco Planning and Zoning Commission on April 11, when he is expected to ask the commission to rezone the property to Old Town Commercial.

If approved by the P&Z and City Council, Churchman said he is expecting to break ground at the beginning of fall.

Per the previous article, I was worried the new building was to sit atop an above-ground garage. What a relief.

First look: Next phase of Old Parkland campus will add an office building

The 90,000-square-foot classical "Jeffersonian style" building was designed by Dallas' Beck Group and United Kingdom architect Craig Hamilton.

The six-story office project at Maple Avenue, Dallas North Tollway and Knight Street will have three levels of underground parking.

Plans also call for "a thematic sculpture in the front plaza" of the new building, according to Crow Holdings.

"We already have commitments for approximately 40 percent of our new office space and are delighted the market continues to support our development."

Now that Crow is done with this project how I wish they would buy that land across the Dallas Tollway and do to it what they did to Old Parkland. Quality work!
