Helicopter shots way more expensive based on the amount of coverage from these drone shots.

These pictures really showcase why Philadelphia is a really unique place. You basically have a 20th and 21st Century business district dropped into the center of an intact 19th century core with very little transition between the two and a mixing in many cases.

Someone refresh me on what the rumor is for this site:
"Liberty to demolish building on parcels acquired with Comcast " (19th and Cherry)

Plus perhaps the largest surviving stock of 18th cent residential in Old City

I don't think it makes any attempt to measure or equalize quality of living in the city and the suburbs or the things that drive many people to choose one over the other. All it really shows is that cheap housing is available in many parts of Philadelphia. We know this.

The assumption in the analysis is that the City dweller pays less than $7500 for mortgage and property taxes. Unless you you are a long time home owner (but then you probably don't have young kids) or live in a very depressed area, you are probably paying pretty close to the suburban figure of $20,000 annually ($1,700/month).

This picture makes me both EXTREMELY thankful that the Crosstown Expressway was never constructed, and very inspired as to why the fight to cap the length of the Vine Street Expressway is a worthwhile one. This seamless transition of high-density towers to lower-density rowhomes should exist between Center City and North Philly just as much as it does between Center City and South Philly. Although the area around the VSE has improved ASTRONOMICALLY, a complete capping between 22nd and 9th Streets (with a continuous interchange between the VSE and BFB) would improve the vibrancy and pedestrian levels considerably.

In the meantime, would adding a sidewalk and taking out a lane of traffic on each side of Vine Street that abuts the expressway be too much to ask for? I think that this would be an improvement that makes Vine Street feel more pedestrian-oriented.

I think Cincinnati is an interesting case study in trying to improve their urban freeway situation. Fort Washington way used to be a huge scar on downtown:

There's still room for improvement, but they reduced its size and improved the pedestrian experience around it. Trees and planters help a lot. And of course sidewalks on both sides of the surface streets:

Another possible solution, also out of Ohio, comes from Columbus, where they lined an overpass with buildings. When you're on it you don't even realize you're crossing a highway:

Also, sorry for the giant picture--anyone know how to make it smaller?

I'd also add that Cincinnati has plans to cap their highway in the future. The city has established a website to seek input:

http://www.connecttheblocks.org/

Maybe that's something we could do?

Unrelated to current discussion, I just discovered this little building called Mandeville place
Why was it never built? I can't find any thread about it anywhere

EDIT:

Some sources I've looked at say it was cancelled due to the 2008 recession, but I can't find anything coherently saying just that.

Thank you! That is all very interesting stuff, especially the link that you provided. If we could garner enough political will--both within the city of Philadelphia, AND from PennDOT and the Commonwealth--I could see a complete vision coming together. Give it a little time, as younger people like myself are interested in city politics and actually care about the viability of this amazing city. I believe that we younger Millennials will attempt to gain office in the coming elections and actually push for projects such as Cincinnati's vision!

I was worried they were going to convert the building from jewelry manufacturing to residential, which would have been another blow to the street's jewelry ties. Alas, the building is getting six stories taller and not losing its existing tenants. I think that's a good thing. But again, I really hope the retail part of the Toll building are reserved for jewelers, not a CVS or some new "fast casual" chain concept.
