Hey Colorado, keep your dirty hands off our show. Our leaders better get their hands out of their asses and freaking find a damn developer and break ground THIS YEAR for the CCH. Enough bullshitting. Built the damn thing already. Between the whole federal public lands issue and the lack of a CCH, the ODR will find many reasons to leave us.

While it will be great to get a Convention Center Hotel if Outdoor Retailers leave it is because of our state legislature and governor and their disrespect and animosity for our public lands.

Liberty Boulevard is huge.

I like Bonneville. I wish it had ground floor retail, but its presence on 500 East isn't overwhelming. And it looks like the finishes will be true to the rendering, although the yellow isn't as bright:

Also, Isaac, you mentioned the Northwest Pipeline development in your article. Have you heard anything recent about it? I'm with Orlando in wondering if it's dead or dying. It's one of the best proposals we've seen.

This will never happen, Metcalf's words or not. He's playing with a short hand. Utah is retarded on land preservation but walking away will not help anybody. Just like when people were going to boycott the Sundance Film Festival over the Church's "Prop 8" stance. Who is it supposed to hurt again? Metcalf is in Utah, will never leave Utah and the 30% of exhibitors who are from Utah will never leave Utah. You know why? Utah is the outdoor recreation capital of the world. You know how many of these guys lick their chops to escape their hellish existence in Chicago and hit the Bird or Powmow after a 40 inch dump? You shoulda seen all the shit-eating grins on their faces at this year's show after our early January dump fest. These guys and gals are powder whores. Denver is way too far away from the mountains. No other urban area on Earth has the access that Salt Lake City has. SLC is basically the biggest ski town on the planet. Our four hour radius is absolutely looney tunes. I know lots of exhibitors and they all love coming to SLC. I wouldn't be surprised to see OR expand to other markets but it's here to stay.

This on the other hand I really like, I actually like that half of the units front the Alley. It allows the alley to be activated and essentially become another N/S corridor in the neighborhood. I think alleys, particularly in Central 9th, could be utilized to a much greater degree. Projects like this, and the potential for accessory/secondary units above garages that the entrance fronts the alley could be really cool.

I like so much of the stuff planned for Central 9th. I'm excited for the changes that neighborhood is seeing.

On another note:

Is this supposed to be ugly? It looks out of place. And is it covered in 100% stucco? Because that's what it looks like.

Yeah, it's impossible to tell what kind of finish that Marriott will have on it from the rendering. That particular address though deserves something a lot better than a 100% stucco finish. Overall, I'm developing a bit of a negative attitude toward Marriott and their lack of impressive contributions to the downtown scene. The City Center Marriott is okay, but I would have thought that Salt Lake City deserves a lot better from a hotelier whose founding family owes their roots to Utah. The Marriott family still owns an impressive percentage of the company. Not that there's anything wrong with the many small and medium sized hotels that they've developed. I just think that with the companies unrivaled portfolio of upscale offerings such as Ritz Carlton and everything Starwood, they would have built something special in the way of hotels for Salt Lake City these past few years.

I like the 830 S. West Temple Ruby Project.

Unfortunately, the Marriott project is primarily stucco (EIFS) except for the ground floor and glazing. On a more positive note, it will occupy what is currently a parking lot and will not require any demolition. It will also improve and help to activate the existing public walkway from 200 South to Pierpont which many do not even know exists. I'm not sure that I think it's ugly but I certainly do not think it's attractive. It's a completely forgettable design.

I'm with you on this Ironweed. However, that link cites San Jose as a good example of compact development. San Jose is sprawltown USA. San Francisco is an example of compact development.
