A great photo update!

Does anyone know if the plan then is to remove the old bridge and replace it after the (first part of the) new bridge is built? Why else would structure be built under the existing bridge?

I remember reading somewhere that that was the plan, yes. I'm not sure why though

Yes, the plan is to construct a single wider bridge across the cut, rather than two separate ones. I have no idea how they're intending to handle the logistics of doing that, but let's hope they have some sort of plan

Thanks for the update!

Interesting that they removed the beam from the "Safeway wall". You'd think they'd re-use that to support the new platform.

Purely based on the Metrotown strategy the plan is to remove the old bridge, string a rope across the chasm and let people zipline across to provide more engaging experience while the new bridge is being built for the next 6 months...

If only they would do that at Metrotown - zipline across Central Blvd!

Make it an opportunity for "urbanized eco-tourism". Install a toll to cross central boulevard lol

((I tried))

From what I read before in the news, the new bridge will be pre built offsite and then transported to the station. It looks like the new structure being built under the existing bridge will form the support.
The bridge replacement probably will happen on a Saturday night after service is closed.

They were fabricating it in January so I assume it's sitting somewhere finished.

Thanks for the pics. That looks like it could be the bridge across Broadway/Shoppers.

There are plans to eventually open a Grandview Highway entrance north of the existing stairs down to the Commercial platforms. This would have been a good opportunity to build that and re-route passengers that way while they install the new bridge...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I read there will be no new bridge until Burnaby and the property owners get together and pay for it. Even then, I'm also pretty sure it will be west of the current bridge, closer to the Station Square (and might not even connect to Metrotown without having to go down the stairs and cross the bus loop).

The bridge he was talking about is at Commercial-Broadway, which doesn't have anything to do with Burnaby or Metrotown.

Agreed, although it would cause some inconvenience it would allow for time for the bridge to be replaced. I'm not sure how they plan to remove the existing bridge and put the new one in without impacting service. I find it highly doubtful they will be able to overnight.

This is Vancouver! We can only have boring infrastructure here, minimalism is key!
