We can be nicer about it... If someone has trouble walking much of any distance then should they really be taking regular transit? I'd think HandyDart or something comparable would be more appropriate in those circumstances. Sure TransLink wants to be inclusive - but that doesn't mean that everyone can and must be accommodated.

Have you taken HandyDart? it would still stop at the bus loop and the person would still have to walk to the south Elevator.

HandyDart has gotten very bad since it was privatized. 30 minute minimum window for pickup and drop-off, the longer the distance the the longer the drop off period.

Progress at Joyce:

I spy plumbing.

I also see the new signs are already living up to their penny pinching quality.

As part of the ongoing work at Metrotown Station, construction crews will lift the second half of a massive 120 ton overhead steel structure overnight on September 10 – that’s this Saturday!

To give crews the time and space they need to safely install the loop truss, SkyTrain will not run between Patterson and Royal Oak stations after midnight on Saturday, September 10. Scheduled construction for September 9 has been cancelled.

Looks like white is Translink's new favorite color as Joyce station also has the loop truss painted white.

Uhm it's not as if that's new news. They've been repainting the green items white on these reno jobs since day one. They don't seem to have figured out that you need to clean it constantly to keep it looking good.

Regardless of color they SHOULD be cleaned regularly for proper maintenance purposes.

It's like having a white kitchen. On the bad side, when it's dirty it looks dirty. On the plus side, when it's dirty it looks dirty... so you know you have to get off your — — and clean it! Nothing worse than having something designed to encourage sloppy laziness.

I don't care what colour it is as long as it is functional.

Part of the report into that big breakdown a few years back pointed out there was a lack of maintenance all over the system. A lot of the pressure plate systems for example have not been maintained for years much less cleaned and because of this they have on occasion failed to operate when tested.
Part of the reason why the underground stations were so dim before the new lighting was installed before the Olympics was because the fixtures have almost never been cleaned. They're still really filthy.
My biggest criticism has always been the skylights at Stadium. When they began to wear out and leak instead of replacing them they were covered with blue vinyl sheets which made the upper ticket hall really gloomy.

Expo Line uses pressure plates, basically metal trampolines to detect when someone has stepped into the guideway at stations.

If something disturbs one of the pressure plates (such as a person or soda bottle falling onto the tracks) it emergency stops the trains.

Watching SkyTrain attendants test the plates is fun to watch, because they literally jump on each one like a trampoline.

The Millennium and Canada lines use a newer laser-based intrusion detection system, though it's not perfect either. While it doesn't have the same issues as the pressure plates, occasionally you get a newspaper or leaf blocking the laser and causing the trains to stop.

Whenever we get a good snowfall the stations and trains regularly get manned with attendants because the snow itself will cause sensors all over the system to go off. Back in late 2012 I can recall Joyce had three trains stacked up heading inbound waiting for another train that had stopped due to a false alarm. Eventually an attendant had to wander down the track and confirm the line was clear before disabling the system and things started moving again.

I remember reading on this thread that the second section of the new roof at Metrotown was going to be lifted Sep. 9th. Can anyone confirm wether or not it has been installed?
