LOL... Then they picked a really bad place to build.... Because They are going to be surrounded by West High & Byu business collage where they are not much older... In fact I suspect that a lot of collage kids will end up living in the building, just as they do in my building just up the street.

I think mostly they would just gather around the place at lunch though. I remember when I was in high school Crown Burger and Subway got a ton of business... Then all the kids who smoked hung out at the burger place on 300 N & 300 W... The place that there now is pretty good BTW... I always forget they are there though. That was originally an Arctic Circle... Then it was Fast Food Express for a long time.

New report shows Downtown is growing at a historic rate.

Good news for Downtown's growth. Though I certainly wouldn't cut the definition of Downtown off at 400 S, as did the Gardner study. I prefer to think of Downtown going to at least 600 S.

Downtown technically goes all the way down to Harvey Milk Boulevard (900 S.)

Sad about the CCH status or lack thereof. Seems like our entire big building scene is at a standstill until that resolves. My guess is they will be back at the trough for more subsidies soon. Weird how it's not even news that it's stalled out. Tough year for McAdams. Facebook deal, CCH, "Weekend at Bernies" at the recorder's office, Mountain Accord, petrified planning and zoning and health departments.

So true about the CCH stall. I do wish they would get all of the pieces of the puzzle together finally. I do think that with 111, UPAC, and Regent St. wrapping up we'll soon see some movement on one or two additional major projects such as the 151 Tower, and the Regent Hotel.

I would anticipate both of those you mentioned starting up soon. Now that The Regent parcel is cleared of staging, or close to, they will be able to move forward. As for 151, considering 111 was 80% leased at the time of ribbon cutting I wouldn't be surprised to see 151 break ground early next year.

Man, I hope so. I think both those buildings (Regent Hotel and 151) are ideal fits for their locations and what Salt Lake demands right now so they're not unrealistic, and both are good designs. Pretty rare we got all that.

He cut it off at 400 South and North Temple but still included projects on 500 South and 200 North in his numbers.

I was wondering the same thing. I feel like property owners proposed a project just to get it approved and then sell it to someone else (like the 6-story project that was proposed in Central Ninth in 2014).

The planning commission approved a condo building in the east bench that will be essentially built into a hillside.

So here is something I having been mulling over for a while.

The gist of it is that small schools do not equal small classroom sizes. Larger schools are more efficient in terms of management(think principals) and cost of facilities. They are able to offer their students more for less $. I think that SLC should take advantage of economies of scale by condensing all 3 of the High Schools(West, East, and Highland) into one central High School. If we focused the entire city on the success of a single campus that modeled itself after the University experience we could create one of the premiere high schools in the nation. This is the location that I would choose for Salt Lake City High.

Are you aware that West High alone uses up about 3 city blocks? I really dislike that idea. West High is our oldest High school and I would like it to always remain that way.

But... They need to do something with that block.... Ken Garff recently tore down their main building for the dealership and built a new one even further back from the road... I'm really surprised that the city approved that. I ultimately don't think the city should issue Andy building permits for any car delearships north of 700s. We really need to phase those things out of down town. They are a waste of space. At the very least they could have made them build the building right at the sidewalk. They could have either built a fully indoor dealership, or else put the lot behind the building and just had a few display models inside.

Also... what is this Pizza Hut property thing up a couple of posts? What Pizza Hut property is this?

I can understand why they would be doing this. Think of all the NIMBY's that come out when a few apartments are proposed in their area of town, now times that by 1,000's. Everyone agrees that the homeless issue needs to be addressed, but everyone is going to feel the same that is should be addressed in someone else's neighborhood. I still think the state and county should force some facilities into other communities, it's not like all the homeless people are from SLC to begin with.

It's not an enviable position that the Mayor and Council are in, but they realize that they will never convince the residents that a shelter facility is a good idea. I'm also guessing that homelessness may be able to be classified as a disability, or mental illness. Facilities for disabilities and mental illness,, by state law, can pretty much be places in any zone. It's not like they are going to pick a site anywhere near the heart of Sugarhouse, or something similar, or anywhere near any serious population base. My guess is the they are going to be located in more industrial areas, that still have transit service. I would anticipate that some of the new facilities will be located on parcels currently owned by SLC, SL County, the State or the LDS Church.

This is when each Council member will have to step up and balance the needs of their constituents, and the needs of the homeless.
