I was at gateway this morning and it appears that they are removing the painted stone and replacing it. I couldn't tell if the charcoal grey was a final coat.

I did notice that the Old Navy building has a large remodel going on. I think someone posted about it a while ago but I can't remember. Construction workers have demoed the front and have added a new entrance to the back of the building along 50 South.

I drove by the gateway this morning. I'm still reserving my opinion, however, i absolutely love how well the greenery has grown, especially the trees. I wish the trees were a little larger. It makes the place feel more mature.

There is a section here on the "SkyScraperPage" called Super Tall. It discusses upcoming massive towers.

Salt Lake could start a forum called super short. It might dominate the headlines for some time...

Very cool 'Missing Middle' project Isaac, and thank you for reporting on it. Like you, I am very happy to see these projects popping up throughout the city.

Seriously, I love this one. It's mixed use, well designed, a good fit for the neighborhood, and fills in previous blight. There are quite a few spots on the more east side of downtown that I wish could be filled in with things like this, but for now I'll just be happy that we're getting this one.

Oh, I didn't even mention any of the theaters in St. Paul, which almost cuts the metro in half.

They include the Northrop Auditorium (2,700), Ordway theater (2,206), Fitzgerald theater (1,058), and Park Square theater (350).

Amen. Important that these things are happening though. Fill up spaces, create scarcity. Deals are getting harder to get. 4th south is basically becoming a half ass residential corridor now. Sort of fine with me. The most overrated street in the city. IMHO vertical mixed use doesn't work except in the highest of densities. So we lost a Sizzler. Meh. One thing they could do is create a retail corridor through zoning and force horizontal mixed use with street fronting retail. That's pretty draconian.

The culture of Salt Lake City is really starting to gross me out. Our leadership live in suburban single family houses and they oversee the building of uninspiring dormitories to add housing to our city.

No one in the City Council or Mayor's office seem to actually know what urban life is. And now everyone has their hair on fire about this affordable housing crisis which just sounds like people totally inept at building urban life pushing the pedal to the metal to build crap even faster. The outcome will be cheap looking, the massing will continue to be all wrong, and it will be another segment of the city that we ignore in our minds as we drive by in our cars no different than the parking lots left behind.

We're a city full of burnouts who care more about hiking than our streets, old people who don't care anymore, and young people trying to get on their feet in life who inevitably leave as soon as they get established. We fund lots of little art projects that no one stops to take pictures of or next to because it isn't very interesting or bold in size or subject. Everyone thinks they're creative here, but no one really does anything worth noting.

It honestly just seems like a city where the leadership doesn't care and the developers don't care. And the people don't care (unless its about saving our water shed). The LDS Church has a vision for the city and that's about it. And that makes me sad.

I'm really, really disappointed in this project. I'm starting to hate fourth south. Historic buildings are being demolished and replaced with large, block-sized apartments whose only interaction with the street is a clubhouse. There are enough of these on 4th south...
