I'm not worried about HU going 2/weekly. It's just temporary, and the timing of the service you have to give credit where it is due for the resilience of our airport to pull through with a positive growth for this year. Were they in a rush to snag the YYC spot before AC, maybe maybe not. But at the end this is something that is prepared for long term success just like the NRT route years ago.

I hope that once the loads do improve in the coming future that they'll upgauge to the 789 as 6 of them will be painted in KungFu Panda color schemes and one will be designed by me! (hopefully, provided I win the design contest next month. I am taking great efforts to research the airline and brand and even made a comprehensive 787-9 template to doodle my design concepts before finalizing the render on HU's website, its an awesome idea to reach out to the public like this)

ALso did anybody get woken up by a classic 747 of Kalitta that came in a few days ago? It felt familiar to hear some reverser noise travel all the way into downtown at 3am.

I also heard from the AC CEO at the May Chamber of Commerce luncheon, if AC gets scommercially viable year round slots at PEK, they will launch YYC-PEK.

If you are trying to compare HU at YYC vs FI or KLM at YEG; those are two different scenarios. No Calgary civic booster mentioned AC or the NRT route during the launch or promotion of HU coming to town.
And that's it... Having "commercially viable slots." The slots are available and AC will be expanding YYZ-PEK again but the thing is you could probably fill additional flights leaving YYZ or YVR at any time of day due to just the sheer market size. From YYC, the slots would have to be conducive on both ends of the route to be viable.

One thing we can definitely rule out for any Canadian airport is any Chinese airline adding and new or expanded flights for at least a few years.

And I'm sure every airport authority in Canada learned a lesson from that PR faux pas.

Would not be surprised, Air China is coming down hard with steep cuts and promotions, more Chinese destinations in the bucket to choose from, Hainan's domestic reach is just not there.

Hey all, long time lurker, very infrequent poster.

I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to post this question, but am wondering if anyone has any experience flying Air China? I am looking into flights from Vancouver to Sydney in January, and would ideally like to fly Star Alliance for the points. Air Canada's prices are astronomical ($1900 one way), but Air China (connecting through PEK) isn't bad ($1050). Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've flown it before, although it was several years ago. It's pretty average service, nothing exceptional or anything. Just a general experience from me, don't remember much at all.

Am I reading that right? Not a single transatlantic destination being served summer 2017 from YYC? Instead 4x weekly YYC-YYZ to connect.

WS and others eating their lunch?

Is this actually good news for BA? AirTransat will still probably offer a cost incentive but people may have become accustomed to non-stop service. Additionally, I've seen AC, BA and KLM offer some really sweet incentives for connections in Europe.

One would have to think WS would have at least some part in it. Unless AT was significantly cheaper, it's not likely anyone would use the connector to YYZ for a Europe trip.

Any bets on how long it will take Noflyzone to give a grandiose announce that AT no longer will be doing overseas flights from YYC?

I posted the questions in the Canada airport thread, got a reply that there still will be Western Canada-Europe flights. However if that is the case that page I linked to doesn't even make a single mention, not a good job of advertising that those options will continue.

That article seems to be just highlighting flight increases out east and adding flights from YYC to YYZ (4x pw) and from YVR to YYZ (daily) and YUL (2x pw) for connections.

YYC definitely will still be served directly to Europe... Similar sched to this summer with 7 weekly flights:

LGW 3x pw (WED,FRI,SAT)
MAN 2x pw (TUE,SUN)
AMS 1x pw (MON)
CDG 1x pw (SUN)

This is interesting, and I think is a direct competitive response to the market. It is cheaper to fly from YYC to the UK this fall than it is to fly to YYZ. Transat probably is seeing more space to price compete on the high volume domestic routes than on the European routes.

Tipping the new route to LGW on WS might have something to do with that.... going to have to lower those fares to fill three 262 seat 763s per week to London. That's a very bold move during the weakest time of year for Western Canada - Europe travel. Probably indicative of why TS dropped its YYC-LGW for the winter.

And with all the trouble Westjet has been having with those former QF birds, they better have a good contingency plan in place! Certainly a good reason why QF dumped them!

AT use to be all wide body. They had a fleet that could fly from anywhere in Canada to Europe.

As they have replaced older aircraft they have switched to a mixed fleet of widebody and 737. With the shift away from Mexico during the summer, the 737 have to be used somewhere. That means domestic feed. Makes sense to run thouse between YVR and YYC and the eastern hubs of Toronto and Montreal. What are they going to do otherwise, part the aircraft or focus on Las Vegas?

I got my invite for October 5th. The deadline to RSVP is Monday, and my schedule for October won't be released until Tuesday, but I still said "yes, I'll be there", and hope for that day off!
