Overall I am quite happy with this, Northlands can wind down horse racing in an orderly fashion and in the meantime the city can begin a redevelopment plan for the site south of the Expo, the coliseum has a chance of being repurposed (but most agree that if it can't it should be razed.. Which I would fully support if a use can't be found, and Expo can keep doing its thing, in conjunction with the Shaw

Frankly, Expo should be turned into indoor soccer fields. Convention business should be downtown.

Likely another slice of units has been cleared for sale at the current point in construction. They may "sell out" a number of times as they sell what they can when they can based on the progress of the building.

That's your view. Most convention organizers will by pass a city that does not have hotels in the immediate area of the congress halls. Particularly in cold climate cities.

Anybody hearing anything about the Ultima?......Hearing there are issues with pretty serious deficiencies....things like broken granite countertops....hopefully its not a widespread issue.

anyone know how many oz of gold went into the original scotia glazing?

with all the 'modern' financial options out there, I'm surprised some bank or fund didn't front the gold for new glazing and then sell shares in it by the oz for RRSPs

I'd say window based gold holdings would be relatively secure.. having a whole building de-skinned on the sly would be quite the heist!

So about 512 ounces. At today's price, you are just shy of $678,000 in gold in the windows.

If Scotia Place has about 6.8x the office space of Energy Square, and thus roughly 6.8x the gold glass (if all things were equal), that is about $4,610,000 in gold in Scotia Place's glass.

It’s hard to find a happier man in town than Jim Taylor.

For years, the affable director of the Downtown Business Association has been advocating for new investment in Edmonton’s long-depressed city centre. Now, with Rogers Place set to open this month, Taylor says his biggest problem is that he’s getting tired of saying “I told you so.”

“It’s like Christmas Eve. All the presents have been bought and they’re under the tree. Now we just need to take the wrapping off,” he enthuses.

It’s not just the arena itself that has Taylor so gleeful. It’s all the stuff going up around it.

The 27-floor Edmonton Tower, almost finished, which is to be occupied by year’s end.

The 67-storey Stantec Tower, now rising above grade, soon to be the tallest building west of Toronto.

The luxury 55-storey J.W. Marriott Hotel, already under construction, the first major four-star hotel to be built downtown in decades — and the first to be topped with 264 “service flats”, high-end condos for people who want hotel room service and other such grace notes.

Another 40-storey apartment now, just now breaking ground, on the site where the bedraggled old Greyhound Station once stood.

Edmonton's real estate market holds steady despite economic slump

Edmonton’s real estate market held steady in August despite a continuing economic slowdown in Alberta.

Numbers released Friday by the Realtors Association of Edmonton show modest year-over-year declines in home prices and sales for the month, typically one of the busiest periods of the year for real estate activity.

A single-family home in the Edmonton census metropolitan area sold on average for $434,362 in August, for a 0.8-per-cent drop from a year ago.

Condominiums posted a 1.12-per-cent decrease in average selling price to $251,526 from August 2015. The average duplex/row house sold for $344,377, down two per cent year-over-year.

“Alberta’s economy has been under enormous pressure for some time, but the residential real estate market in the Edmonton census metropolitan area continues to hold,” Steve Sedgwick, chairman of the Realtors Association of Edmonton, said in a statement.


“Prices and unit sales for residential homes are consistent with last year, down less than one per cent and two per cent respectively.”
