Does Edmonton have a petition process to bring in neighbourhood parking permits?

^ they do but it is cumbersome and full of red tape. It took years of complaints and petitioning to just get the major event restrictions around Commonwealth. They really need to put in 2 hour restrictions around stations like Stadium to discourage people from parking on residential side streets during the week

Speaking of which, this Friday I will be learning about what the final plan is for the arena/downtown parking meter plan/situation.

^^ I've heard that too, and apparently for neighbourhoods along the Valley Line, you will only be able to apply for restrictions pretty much once it's up and running.

So not a great process, but it is there, and it's very likely most neighbourhoods that apply for restrictions will have them granted.

I understand the concerns, but whoever made the posters seems to either have no idea that applying for parking restrictions will be possible, doesn't want restrictions either, or - and this is the one I'm going with - is just spreading more FUD about LRT expansion.

Interesting to note who designed High Level Bridge suicide barriers. It's almost like Hall D redux

http://edmontonjournal.com/news/politics...r-superior-suicide-barrier-on-high-level

Quote:
DIALOG architects was hired to come up with three options for the High Level barrier. It presented them to council in August 2014.

The first option, a chain-link fence costing $1.2 million, was rejected because it was unsightly. It might prevent suicide, but as Coun. Ben Henderson put it, it would make being on the bridge’s multi-use path an “unpleasant experience.”

The second option, the one council picked, was priced at $3 million. It was to be built inside the existing guardrail and be made up of horizontal tension cables with new steel poles. It was based on a barrier built in Bristol, England, that had cut the suicide rate in half.

The third option was described as “state of the art design.” It cost $7.4 million. It was the only option to be erected outside the old guardrail. It was based on designs from Toronto and Melbourne, Australia. It would angle out from the bridge and have vertical stainless steel tension cables, which are extremely difficult to climb.

In Melbourne, this model had reduced suicides 85 per cent. In Toronto, it eliminated suicides from a bridge hot spot.

“It’s the least climbable of all the options,” said DIALOG’s Donna Clare.

The vertical cable option had one other huge advantage over the other two options: it would stop folks from jumping from the top deck streetcar platform, not just from the multi-use path.

The police had made it clear it was difficult and risky to rescue people off this top deck, as there was nothing there to keep first responders from falling off the bridge.

“This one is the most expensive option, but it also has the most safety features associated with any of the options that have been modelled to date on the bridge,” Clare said.

The ineptitude of our council is almost unreal. Where the hell is any real thought in any of this.

Hopefully end up with much wider paths as part of a more comprehensive solution in a few years. Worth at least as much as the mechanized access project that seems to have snuck through due to sheer momentum. Some thought on access on either end of the bridge would be nice too, including some regular maintenance to keep icing down to a normal sidewalk level of risk.

Well, Donna is the Butcher of Hall D, so I think you're spot on. Pretty sure she skipped the day they taught contextualization.

ETS released their fall schedule changes with the first round of route optimization. Anyone have any reactions?

Noticed an LRT ad today encouraging riders to use the Capital Line and get off at Bay Enterprise Square during Rogers Place events.

Bay, 650 m - 8 min walk
Churchill, 750 m, 9 min walk
Central, 950 m, 11 min walk
Corona, 1000 m, 13 min

But that'll direct them all through or adjacent the supersensitive Urban Warehouse microneighborhood that must be protected at all costs from too much vibrancy!

Gosh ETS, get your act together!

Does this take into account the interminably long, pedestrian-snarly waits to cross Jasper Ave and 102 Ave? Or cutting through the pedway system? Or having to navigate through ICE District's construction zone?

^^Is that a reference to the megabar concerns? That has nothing to do with people walking up and down the streets. Vibrancy/foot traffic is exactly what is needed in the Warehouse district.

If you get off the LRT and access the proper exit, you won't need to cross Jasper Ave. Crisis averted!!!!

Thank Heavens!! Sick and tired of these idiots trying to fight this. Reading the journal's article this morning about the injunction and how it would halt construction would cost hundreds of millions of taxpayer money was making my blood boil.

Not surprised it was tossed. It was a spurious last-ditch effort to find a legal loophole.

Did any of those people think it through? Even if they had won, did they really think the entire LRT project would get shelved to save one footbridge, as opposed to, say, the province granting the city the suppoedly-required permission to proceed?
