That shot of Red Deer is actually one of the nicer shots. At least you can't see Gaetz Avenue. That newer high rise under construction in the background is actually decent in real life. Also, some of the historic part of Red Deer is alright. Overall though Red Deer is like a drive thru McShitty's.
The city really screwed up with this one. They sold the lot to a developer and included a buy-back agreement but it was so poorly designed that lawyers later advised city councillors not to even try to exercise it.
The developer claims to be working on a new proposal for the site. The last one was for a pair of 48-storey towers that broke just about every planning rule in place for the area.
The old TexPark was a bit unusual in that it had a gas station in it (that boarded-up lower level). Originally it was developed by Texaco and by the 90's it was operated by Ultramar. You don't really see things like that anymore. Most of the gas stations in Canadian urban cores are disappearing.
There also used to be a 1920's-style gas and service station near Sackville Street and Dresden Row. Some people wanted it to be designated as a heritage site.
Calgary has exactly one gas station left in it's downtown core and negotiations have been ongoing to make it disappear. I do, however, fill up there on the odd occasion if I happen to be in the area because they have very good prices and they actually fill your vehicle for you. Yeah, it's not spiffy clean and new like so much around it but that does give it a bit of it's own unique charm and it'll be sad to see it gone. It would be kind of neat if it was allowed to stay and bring back more of it's original look - Google Streetview shot.

There's also the one on the corner of 11th ave and Macleod Trail in the Beltline. The DT core itself has no gas stations. This one and the one in East village are unique and add an element I'd really hate to see disappear.
Going by the strictest definition I don't believe there are any gas stations in downtown Edmonton, though there is a Petro-Canada on the west side of 109th street, which technically means it's in Oliver, though the Legislature and Government Centre is literally across the street.

I take it you're referring to the faux chateau? Other than that you've got good stuff like EAP, Canterra and Centennial Place and then some blah filler. You can't even see 5 West from that angle. Not sure what else is more horrid than a baby blue and pink pastel stucco shit box?
It appears Calgary's reached a point where we're starting to get shitty, mailed in modern infill. This one I saw yesterday has the potential to be good but whoever chose the materials has no taste or restraint. I can't imagine a more tacked on, more for the sake of more application of wood and stone. You can't see it here but the indent on the side by the fence was stone all the way up.

Yeah people don't seem to realize that natural wood needs to get stained again periodically or it ends up looking like ass. The shingles on the front of houses trend where I live in the SE is the same.
