Well I think it's because Retail is a large source of Monctons tourism. I also don't think that people are "chest-thumping", it was actually someone pointing out that there has been lots of new development in the last few years, as someone mentioned that they felt things were slow.
But I can agree that sometimes retail talk can become to much, that's why I don't partake in a lot of the conversations on this specific thread, because it's not for me.

You're right that people in general (from all over the province) talk more about Moncton when it comes to retail. That's normal, it clearly is a bigger deal for the city than others. So, I suppose that also reflects on these threads (especially this one), though I'm not sure we're obsessing... A healthy obsession perhaps!

Moncton doesn't have a beach, isn't on the coast, doesn't have a harbour and it's not the Capital of the Province.

It does have Retail that attracts people from other places.

It would be perfectly reasonable to obsess about it.

Good stuff. It sounds like they might be taking over almost the entire footprint of the building.

I guess they're taking advantage of the vacuum created by the demise of the Petculture store at the Northwest Centre.

Just a small correction; Hudson has 2 Bay stores in the Maritimes; one in HRM, the other in Sydney.

And the popular theory is they want to get back into the Moncton market; they're just waiting for the right space (ie Champlain Place) to open up.

The only way I see them coming back into Moncton into an already built space is if there willing to shrink there store size by almost half or expand the foot print of an already existing store like Sears (they would only really need to expand to the edge of the building on the bus stop side to get the same size floor plan they had a Highfield Square +/-) if they (Sears) close there doors.

I agree the only logical space I can see is at CF Champlain where the Sears is or what they could do is build a brand new store in the downtown core close to the event center. And for Sears looking at the news lately is they are bleeding cash so bad and I think it's just a matter of time until they shut down all together.

I see that there is now a construction trailer on site, so there may indeed be some action soon on the lot next to Sleep Country in the Mapleton Centre after all.

It was an in place when I was a kid(even as a teenager). there was always quite A BIT OF "HUSTLE & BUSTLE" going on there but as soon as the big box store to the far right I believe it was Red Apple closed, and the mall owners refused to follow the times it spelled a soon end. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did after the closure. It must of had to do with the fact most stores in there where the one, and only locations in Moncton, and the fact that the bus stop transfer point was right there in front.

For me growing up in the 80's this is how i saw the mall situation in Moncton. The Highfield Square Mall used to be the UPSCALE mall, The "PRE" expansion of Champlain Place meant that they were the middle scale mall and then the Moncton Mall was on the low end of the spectrum. But all of the malls had their own unique offerings and catered to their clientele. But now with the BIG box stores i think there is more increased competition to the traditional indoor mall.

Highfield Square was in trouble as soon as Champlain Place began to expand in the late 1980's. The real death knell was when the Eaton's chain folded. The loss of such an anchor is difficult to recover from. The Bay may have stepped in to fill the void but the Bay is no Eaton's , and the year long void between the closing of Eaton's and the opening of the Bay saw peoples shopping patterns change drastically.

I'm of the camp that believes that the Bay does want to return to Moncton. At least that was the promise made to Bay employees by the company president when the Moncton store closed. My son was working at the store at the time and told me this. Of course, that was several years ago, and things in the retail industry can change in a fortnight.

if the Bay is to return (and I think it will), then it will be to Champlain Place, and likely to the Sears space once the Sears chain finally goes belly up. I think this is the Bay's plan, and further, I think that if the Bay expands to NB, it will also look at Regent in Fredericton and possibly McAllister in Saint John as the Sears stores there will close too........

According to Google Map, and Petculture's website Petculture is still open but according to Plaza's website The Location is currently vacant. I went by last week, and do believe the sign was still on the front of the building as well. I know they where trying to sell everything in the store before closing there doors.

Per their Facebook page, Case Depot is moving into the space next to the former Dominos location on Mountain Road. Currently they are tucked in behind the Deluxe just up the street. Expect to be open early July

Other than passing through in 1975 (bought some bacon in what I understand used to be K-Mart ....Salvation Army store?) I've only been here since 2005.

The Needs Convenience store and Gas Bar on Mountain Road across from Arby's is turning into a Shell Convenience Store and Gas Bar. Work has begun on the exterior and the new sign is there to be mounted outside.

I think it's staying as a needs, they are just changing the brand from fast fuel to shell. It's becoming more common since Sobeys partnered with Shell.
