Maybe.. But I am hoping that it will stir the start of the development for that end of town.

Signage is now up for the new Sally Beauty location in the strip mall in the Superstore parking lot on Main.

According to the competing Moncton Retail Facebook blog, this move by Reitman's is a temporary one.

This therefore might indicate bigger things going on at the mall. In the past, there has always been a rejuggling of stores and moves to temporary locations as things got moved around in preparation for final renovations, relocations and store openings.

Here's hoping........

Now there are 1, or is it 2 store fronts still vacant in that small strip. It's good to see that they got 2 units filled so quickly.

Sure glad Reitmans is a temporary move, this is prime real estate inside the mall and should not go to your ordinary run-of-the-mill store. This location should be for a first to market, sought-after, only location in New Brunswick, kind of store; Forever21, Zara, Aritzia.

I was hoping so but I think that Cadillac Fairview should do a press release and say what the plan is with the mall. Righ now I feel that the mall is loosing its edge over Regent and McAllster place. But only time will tell. I know when Tommy Hilgger leaves the mall there will be a huge void left there. But do we know what does Cadillac Fairview has planned for the old Sears Auto location?

Also one though I hope that with the new mayor it will foster an easier way on stuff to get built and completed.

Stephan based on your last few posts in this thread I would expect to find the retail scene in town lying dead in the gutter yet we have seen impressive growth in the last few years...sure there are vacancies but we have so many new power center and strip mall developments in the last 5 years coupled with a "meh" Canadian retail seine in general I'm frankly very happy the way things lie now. Bass pro, cabelas, the Brick and a new Costco on the way...both old target locations full.

Re: comparing Champlain to other malls in NB, I think you need to travel a bit and see for yourself, Champlain is far from dead.

Re: comparing moncton retail v halifax...it's apples to oranges Hali is 3x bigger you can't compare...on a per capita basis we crush most for retail sales last time I saw data.

Not saying things are perfect around here but it's certainly far from bad!

Indeed! Plus, DT is slowly coming back with STILE moving on main street and another high end store filling the spot next to Colpitts. With the new centre being built, things are looking up for our DT. Although Champlain place is important, I'd rather see things slow down there than in the core.

Don't get me wrong on a few areas the city is doing well. I am ecstatic that we have landed major retailers such as Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's last year in town. But i know comparing Halifax VS Moncton is like comparing apples to oranges. But where I measure the success on the retail health of a city is the speed that empty storefronts get filled up. An example at the mall there are two empty spots near Sobeys (Old Blacks location and the old Jugo Juice loacation) these have remained empty for at least a year without a solid a tenant. And on Trinity the old Bowrings and the old Danier Leather those spots remained to be filled.

One more thing on Mapleton I am wondering why it takes so long for it to get built up we have prime land there for development and no one coming to claim it that's the question on how I measure the success of a city and I know it can take time.

I am not trying to paint a negative picture of the retail sector in Moncton I base my judgement based on empty locations and Idle for sale or lease land not being developed.

But that is my 10 cents on the issue.

Fair enough, I respect your opinion

In my opinion though I have seen a lot of redundant strip mall and power center type developments all over the metro area pop up in the last 5 years. Also given the fact that Canada has seen a retail contraction for quite a few major chains I'm honestly very happy when I drive around town or go into the mall and see things are very healty looking in general and better than expected in some cases (BPS, both Targets filling so fast)

Just think of some developments in recent memory:

New and "Only NB Location"

Bass Pro Shops
Cabelas
DSW Shoe Warehouse
Ashley Furniture
Party City
Banana Republic Factory Store
Victoria Secret
Fossil
Jack & Jones
Pandora
Moxies Grill & Bar
Mashalls
Linen Chest
Hyba
Zumiez
Golf Town
Swarovski
MAC Cosmetics
Sephora Cosmetics
Mode Choc
Bombay

New and "Largest in NB"

Canadian Tire
Goodlife
The Brick

Plus 7 full service Starbucks (6 of which are quite new) compared to 4 total in Saint John and 2 total in Fredericton.

Again things aren't all rosy but could be much worse!

I agree with you on that that we do have many first to market retailers in the province and I hope that we will be able to work towards that. But I wish that the city would step up to the plate and try to woo more retailers due to the central location that Moncton is.

But I hope things will change and only get better..

They started renos for the Brick today. Have a dumpster by their receiving doors and I seen some guys bringing drywall in the front door when I was on my lunch break at work (superstore)

Why? Moncton is the undisputed retail centre in NB. It doesn't sound like they need much help from the city in fostering that. If anything the city should be looking to diversify a bit.

I have to say, I find Moncton's obsession with retail to be really weird.

"Moncton" is just a city, its the people within the city who enjoy retail, its like a bragging right, being the first to have something or the only place to have something makes some people feel proud. Everyone has different interests, I don't comment much on retail because it's not something I have much interest in, it's nice to see, but it's not for me. Every city has something it can brag about, monctonians are proud of their retail development and they are allowed to be.

You play to you're strengths, all the while trying to hard to develop new possibilities for growth. I believe that's what Moncton is doing as a city. I'm sure some people obsess over retail (don't get me wrong, it is a huge part of the economy), but no more than anywhere else.

I agree that the city needn't involve itself too much in attracting most retailers, except maybe when it comes to its core.

I dunno, seems like the Moncton threads are much more retail-oriented than others around here. There seems to be a lot of obsessing about potential retailers coming to the city. Some people even think that Costco should have two Moncton locations, and someone was being dramatic about a potential new location for Costco being a "disaster" for people from Riverview or something along those lines. That's crazy talk when we're discussing a city the size of greater Moncton area.

Every city has their different obsessions. The Saint John threads tend to obsess considerably about all things Irving.......

Do you mean this thread... The Moncton RETAIL thread, where people talk retail developments.. In and around Moncton there is a lot of retail development going on, so it is kind of hard to avoid it. As for Costco, Moncton is a large city, not big enough for 2, but it is large enough that people will question where it will be built because, it can take a long time to get from one end of the city to the other depending on where you live, time of day etc. Also have you ever read the Saint John threads? Or the Fredericton thread, both talk a lot about retail, especially Fredericton. Retail is something that always seems to be on the move and is always changing, so it's hard not to talk about it.

I'm not talking about this thread in particular, I'm talking about in general. And I'm talking more about the (often unrealistic) speculation of future retail opportunities and the chest-thumping (see list above) about retailers whose only NB or Maritime location is in the Moncton area. I just find it a bit strange that it seems to be such a strong source of pride, that's all. But that's just me.
