I'm sorry Cold but this belongs here. That view perfectly captures the Cold War era exterior of WEM. Like a bomb shelter meets science facility meets the Bay from 35 years ago.

My brother in law is dating a doctor who is originally from Edmonton and while they were visiting her family she also took him by a hospital that was designed by the same architect who did WEM. He showed me pictures of it and it looked very similar inside. The funny part was that it was designed with all these water features for the patients to hang out around in the atrium. Unfortunately patients are not allowed near them anymore since the mist and moisture they emit are great fro transmitting communicable diseases. Now the poor patients have to sadly stare outside their glass enclosed areas at the communal space they were supposed to enjoy but are not allowed to enter. Sad.

Any Chuckistanians know which hospital I'm talking about?

^ Yep, the Royal Alex. Used to just despise going in there as a kid, but not as much these days even after seeing elderly relatives die there, lol. That atrium in the middle is nice and open and makes it feel less soul sucking at least.

The one good thing about WEM is that it has two levels of parking which means it never ended up with a massive surface parking lot that you'd see in Milton etc.

What is with the side-by-side armchairs in rich people's bedrooms? I've seen this in real estate photographs for the fancier houses in my city. It looks so weird.

If so, it is doing very well. Good luck in finding a parking spot if the weather is raining on a regular weekend, the entire parking lot will be full. They are currently expanding the parking lot as we speak.

Not really sure we are really in the era of dying malls. It's really only the small, secondary malls that died and have been largely redeveloped as big box retail or occasionally something decent like Don Mills.

The big malls are probably going stronger than ever and have a much larger range of stores including high end retailers than before. Some of them are getting to the stage where urban type redevelopments/additions at the fringe wouldn't be crazy as they've already had to invest in multi-story parking structures and have expanded pretty close to the actual street front. Thinking Yorkdale, Chinook, Mississauga City Centre etc.
