Not really sure we are really in the era of dying malls. It's really only the small, secondary malls that died and have been largely redeveloped as big box retail or occasionally something decent like Don Mills.
The big malls are probably going stronger than ever and have a much larger range of stores including high end retailers than before. Some of them are getting to the stage where urban type redevelopments/additions at the fringe wouldn't be crazy as they've already had to invest in multi-story parking structures and have expanded pretty close to the actual street front. Thinking Yorkdale, Chinook, Mississauga City Centre etc.
