I feel like people are being too polar on this, either taking the stance of keeping the status quo or completely going car free. In my opinion there should be a healthy balance between cars and pedestrian space in the market, though at the moment i think the scale is tipping in the favour of cars. I think the plans the city has in the works will do wonders for the market and result in a healthy balance between both, such as the pedestrianizing of the rest of William and creation of a linear park on York.
