The reason that the CCH is crawling forward so very slowly cannot be blamed on city or county elected officials. I have spoke directly with a member of the selection committee and until this hotel project has a major hotelier backing it--it's going absolutely nowhere. No bank is going to provide any sort of financing until this project appears feasible from a large, professional hotel group.

It was reported that DDRM was hoping to get Starwood (Marriott) on board. Is Starwood dragging it feet?

I imagine that the very public recent takeover battle of Starwood between Marriott and the Chinese conglomerate threw a major crowbar in the spokes as far as time element. Now that Marriott has won the battle, I'm sure they still have some major business kinks to iron out in the acquisition. Imo, the Salt Lake City CCH kind of came onto the field of play at a time when it's most attractive potential partner was going through a major growth/change acquisition. If Marriott is going to be the partner, and I think it is, we're just going to have to be patient for a little while longer.

If I win the lottery this week I will re incorporate the Shilo Inn brand and construct the CCH as the first new Shilo Inn. I will do what I can to incorporate classic red neon design elements.... It will be 50 stories, no stucco. ;-)

Actually the Fairmont hotel design was changed its now a wall with 37 floors and is currently under construction. The design is still not too bad though would have preferred the original rendered design.

Post on the Bodhi Apartments. This project could be quite the catalyst for the area, pushing more development west of the freeway.

I realize the city needs affordable units and units for the chronically homeless, but I continue to wonder why they don't do a different break down, rather than what is (proposed).
20 - market rate (20)
18 - 80% of median income (0)
19 - 50% of median income (37)
9 - mental illness (9)
9 - physically disabled (9)
5 - Chronically homeless (5)

That is a HUGE discrepancy in income levels in the development, I wonder if the market rate renters are going to feel comfortable. Maybe I'm being short sighted.
Both Poplar Grove and Fairpark Community Council residents are also worried about the high concentration of affordable units within this development, and the trend of high concentrations of affordable units that are currently being planned within the North Temple corridor.

Here is a link to a google map of all the affordable housing in Salt Lake City that has been funded by Low Income Housing Tax Credits LIHTC. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1eOENEIBAfrb4HEdbomqqyOS1aJk&usp=sharing The map is color coded by number of units of affordable housing. This does not include all affordable housing units in the city, but it shows a lot of them, and those funded by are usually at a much lower AMI for their clientele than those funded form other sources.

Here is another "Does anyone know what's going on?".

On the North East corner of 500 East and 200 South there is a 5 or 6 story office building that was fenced off. It is pretty large for the area and looks like it is abandoned. I live across the street from it and was going to take a few photos, but did not get the chance to. Just wondering if anyone knows whats going on with it?

There was a basement fire. I believe it is closed.

Wow.
That is huge, and good news.
I guess the tunnel would run underground from terminal to terminal.
Duh.#$?
Who wants to bet even odds that this is done before the CCH?
Sorry to tie that in.

I'd easily bet that the new terminal at the SLC airport gets done before the convention hotel. At this rate and with how I understand how slow projects move along in Salt Lake City, the hotel probably won't be done until 2022, would be my guess. That's if they even build a hotel and if hotel companies are even interested.

I know I'm not supposed to feed the troll but, I'll bite. Our economy is ABSOLUTELY SMOKING both San Diego and Honolulu's economies by every metric.

The CCH will be done in time for Salt Lake to host the Galactic Games in 2079.

Well except the metric that would be most important to many of us on this thread - and that's commercial development.

For being at the heart of such a surging economy, SLC sure isn't seeing it trickle down toward bigger development. At least, not at the rate of many other cities - San Diego included.

Right, but(iirc) it's the county council that picks the project. It would be crazy disappointing to find out that they left a 600 ft tower on the drawing board in favor of a stubby stucco wall.

You're right it is the county that is going to pick the project, but even at a stubby wall design it's going to be difficult to get 1,000 - 1,200 rooms into a stubby design below 375'.

The Marriott across the street has 510 rooms, and is 215' tall. The CCH will have more convention space, adding more floors to the base of the hotel than what the Marriott has. The Marriott has a longer footprint along 100 S than the available frontage on W. Temple. So even if the Marriott was modified into an L shape, for it to get to even 1,000 rooms it would need to nearly double in height, requiring the review by City Council in order to exceed the height.

Timetable

I know it's easier said then done but I hope for the sake of keeping the outdoor retailer and landing some additional conventions that someone puts a move on this CCH process. Is it really that difficult to find a hotelier for this project? It seems like that should have been in the works already but then again the process is all foreign to me. Can someone in the know list some of the steps that are still needed before we start to get some news on the actual building. Reality is starting to set in

Thanks

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems like they could fit the 800 room minimum within the 375' limit and avoid a design review from the city. Maybe they want to go higher than 375', maybe they want to build a fat hotel.
