From the Homeless Services Site Evaluation Commission Background Information for April 18, 2016 Meeting handout: "Commission's Goals: Determine appropriate siting for up to two resource centers in Salt Lake City. These resource centers will serve the single men and single female populations, and will be designated not to exceed 250 persons. Resource centers will provide housing, as well as treatment and services." Could certainly revise the goal as they get more info. A 250 bed facility would still be more than most neighborhoods would be happy about welcoming.

Not to change the subject, but I'm going to anyway. In all honesty we have to expect that the CCH will be an L shape, or wall, to one extent of the other. My hope is that they will be creative and a portion of it, or two portions will have a tower that is taller than the rest.

Here are a few convention hotels that I like the overall look of:

Fort Worth - Something like this would make sense for the UMOCA site, wide base with plenty of rooms, but still has a tower portion.

Austin - Proposed

Tucson - Proposed

Houston

Denver

Cleveland

I'm wondering what type of high rollers do you see needing/wanting/using one in SLC?
The Outdoor people don't seem the type, and this ain't Vegas or L.A., so I'm just askin.
True, Convention Hotels don't really have helipads, I wasn't thinking of the Salt Lake CCH as strictly a convention hotel however. Like the hotel here in L.A., it will likely have a large upscale residential component. Without the residential component the L.A. CCH probably wouldn't have a helipad either. Whether that's a requirement for a luxury residential component in Salt Lake, I don't know.

I'm glad that the HLC sent back the original proposal due in part to street engagement. That is one of the things that make people hate multi-unit housing is that the older stuff, 50's-90's had zero street engagement. I think the 7th East street engagement on the updated proposal is fantastic. I also like they the developer thought outside the box and added the 7th unit to the top. I also like the extensive use of brick, on the south and west elevations.

Wow, you nailed it EP. the crown is a bit much but the German hotel is almost a perfect fit to tie into the original design of the salt palace. It matches the curve of the existing tower and the crown looks like it belongs with the convention centers design. Can someone post pictures of the German hotel and the salt palace together?

Nice call!

Speaking of street engagement...

There is an interesting new "Storefront Report" which "measures the number and concentration of customer-facing businesses in the nation’s large metropolitan areas."
There are maps of the individual cities. Given the scale of the project one shouldn't complain that there are errors in the SL map..think of it as a memory test "what is really along that stretch of Broadway?" The general trends are apparent and it looks like SL is roughly average for metros of its size.

On the homelessness thing, it's all window dressing. Until we stop putting mentally ill people either in prison or the on the streets, this will continue unabated. And yes, — addiction is a subset of mental illness. All other types of non-chronic homelessness is temporary (I've been there).

In the early 80's, both parties conspired to disband the state mental health systems. The left was concerned with "civil liberties" (see: Cukoos Nest, one Flew Over the) and the right wanted to "save money" (See: Reagan, Ronald). Mix in a little war on drugs and bang.. The homeless and prison populations explode. Everybody scratches their heads and says "where did these people all come from?" We have an advanced enough society to do social mental hospitals with controlled involuntary internment better than we did in the 1920s-1970s. Nothing will happen until we do that, but the left and the right can no longer talk to each other without calling each other stupid names. I don't hold out much hope.

I like the new Austin CCH that FM posted and the Cleveland one is really nice too. I would hope for a little additional height on the Cleveland version and the Austin CCH is over 50 floors so I don't foresee something that tall coming to SLC - although it would be nice The Fort Worth CCH isn't bad and although it's not my first pick, it seems more like something SLC would get.

While it won't be a massive wall, it could still be nearly 300', depending on the layout, how close to the Abravanel plaza they go, and if they retain the walkway from W. Temple to the loading docks or not. The possible facade could be longer than the Nordstrom facade. For reference the Marriott is roughly 330'. While not overly long at 300' or even 250', when you get up towards 20 stories of rooms, that can become a pretty big wall.

You're welcome. Nice design, and it would seem to be using a lot of granite for it's material. Like was posted, it also fits well with the current Convention Center design. I think anything between 500 and 600' would not be too tall or unbalance the skyline. This, mostly because of the COB and the rise it sits on. If anything, we need something taller on that corner to balance out the COB and the added height it gains from its perch. IMO, something in the 500-600' range would make for a much more balanced and attractive skyline than what we have now. I do have confidence in the decision makers that the design will be a two tower (one wing taller and one wing shorter) I don't believe they'll place something similar to a giant wall, like we see with Phoenix, or even Denver for that matter. I think Denver is much more attractive than Phoenix, but still wouldn't fit well at the north location.

Slow last couple weeks everyone in Salt Lake City? You guys make me laugh with these pipe dreams of what you think this hotel will look like.

Since when is Salt Lake City ever flashy or setting new standards with buildings? This hotel will most likely just be T or L shaped and blend in with the other buildings with a natural color look and probably be no taller than the fourth or fifth tallest in Salt Lake City.

In other news, water is still wet in Salt Lake City.
