I'm not sure how it appears faux at all. It's just a brick structure designed to fit in to a mixed use former warehouse district. So if you think this looks ridiculous you must despise Pure Spirit and the likes. These are the buildings that work well, they create needed living space while creating a more intimate pedestrian experience. You must also hate 60 Coloborne, 218 King st East to name a few where they use lol (faux facadasm) with new towers aboive to fit in with their surroundings.

"The relationship between the base and the tower is downright comical." Your opinion only it seems.

That's why aA deserves their praise. They know how to pull off a brick base on a glass tower without looking downright comical. Yeah, it is an opinion. So is this. I question the tastes of anyone that thinks a fat, modern wrap around glass tower on a warehouse base with 28 light windows is a good fit to be copied

The relationship between the tower/base is irrelevant imo. The brick base of the building is 4 stories high, which means, from the person on the street perspective, the glass tower section will be go almost unnoticed.

A building like this would be beneficial anywhere, not just in an existing warehouse district. CityPlace would feel far different (better) if more emphasis was placed on providing quality materials at the base or podium. Even if it was just the first 2 floors, the pedestrian experience would be so much better.

Redevelopment of 8 Avenue Road: The site of the current Park Hyatt Hotel. Oxford Properties. How tall will Queen's Park let them go? Either stupidly tall or 2-3 towers of 30-40 storeys?

Here's my proof:

According to nephersir7 over at MtlUrb, this is the latest rendition of Quad Windsor, the mega project by CF in downtown Montreal. It comprises phases 2 and 3 of Tour des Canadiens (49 storeys, 170 meters - one is already on sale); 750 Peel (two office buildings of 170 and 130 meters) and finally the 600 Peel (three residential towers of 210 meters - if the city approve the height). Nothing is confirmed yet, except of course for the Tour des Canadiens 2.

The 3 residential towers would become Montreal's new tallest at 210 meters, if ever it happens.

I do like how sleek the two future phases of Tour des Canadiens look. Montreal needs more glass towers, as we all know. And I like the fact that the city of Montreal strongly encourages developers to avoid protuberant balconies in favour of loggias. Makes the towers look much more sleek.

I'd personally prefer if Montreal kept away from glass towers, but I know I'm an oddball on that front.

I don't disagree. The condo towers bore the shit out of me but at least they are including residential above the podium. My expectations were really low based on the first renderings so this newest image is at least a positive.

I think it will work because the area these are going into is currently mostly wasted space. If this was going into more dense and historic sections I'd agree.

Interesting, so Montreal's 3 tallest buildings will be somewhat identical looking condo towers topping out at 210.

But due to their lower position on the slope, the IBM, Le 1000 and CIBC will still look taller...

Montreal has an increasingly "Canadian skyline":

A skyline dominated by glass condo towers that all top out at the same rough height. Also contains 1960s era brutalist and modernist apartment towers that are viewable from certain angles. Tall, postmodern corporate or banking towers still visible, but increasingly overpowered by Millennial condo developments of comparable height. Small vestiges of stone-faced pre-war highrises are completely subsumed and only visible at street level.

Here's my proof:
Is the original tower on the corner not heritage protected?

I think it's becoming increasingly obvious that Montreal's next "real" tallest building, that is our next signature highrise that will rise above the rest and act as a true landmark, has to be built on La Gauchetiere between mansfield and University, where the Via rail bunker currently sits. It's the only site in downtown that has a high enough elevation to contend with PVM's height, the best site where a height limit could be reached and a tower at Central station would once and for all plug the gap between the western core skylines arounf the Bell centre and the CBD skyline centered around PVM.

I feel the opposite. I would prefer if the similar looking glass towers be spread around the downtown and mixed in with the more earthy colors rather then lump them all together like Southcore or Vancouver.

Though it might be fine in Montreals case because its close to those Griffintown buildings that, despite being ugly, offer some variation in color and materials.

Montreal should avoid the blue glass high rises that sterilize Toronto and Vancouver.
