Here's an instance where they could of built beside the house. Anyone familiar with development in downtown Toronto knows 2 to 3 storeys is more of an exception than the norm. The densities consistently being proposed are insanely large.

I don't think it makes or breaks one way or the other. IMO

But the Annex and the Entertainment District are two different things.

One is the commercial strip of a residential neighbourhood. The other is a downtown commercial district.

One has funky little shops and restaurants, sure, but the other has the potential for other exciting urban things: grand architecture, the buzz of activity generated by thousands of office workers and people coming out of big chain retail. Big city commercial activity.

A city with the funky, neighbourhood-level stuff but none of the big city buzz feels a little off. Portland, Oregon is probably the best example of this.

The podium looks a hell of lot better than the orange and purple barf bag it was before.

I agree. The loading area looks bad, but you can't really make an area that will house transport trucks look nice, so all things considered, it looks great. I am anxious to see the final design along 6th Avenue as that is one of the two main pedestrian connections between Downtown and East Village.

I am ordinarily in favour of 4-storey plus streetwalls but there is something very Toronto about this mixture of Edwardian house + looming condo tower. It feels honest in the context of the Annex.

Odd = East & South. It's Yorkville. Technically, the Annex begins on the other side of the street however, the true feeling of the Annex is a little bit further west. The house podium still works here. This one just looks stupid.

It does indeed. At the same time, it's a pretty boring development. I would expect better for the East Village. Something that defines inner city community and not an anonymous twin tower on commercial podium development that can be found everywhere. Add some residential floors to the podium.

I strongly agree. Id love to see somthing like this inthe main/danforth area by the tracks. Theres another great brick industrial style condo in the junction, cant recall the name. Calling that podium faux is like calling a 1920s NYC Beaux Arts bank tower faux neoclassical.

In this context, it certainly appears as a faux facadectomy. The relationship between the base and the tower is downright comical.
