Is North West Company actually planning on building a small tower building or is this just more of Centre Venture dreaming.

Keep in mind the Friends of Upper Fort Garry and the membership of the neighbouring Manitoba Club are reportedly very similar. The private Manitoba Club of course would have a strong vested interest in having Upper Fort Gary maintained as a provincial park over being developed into apartments/condos. This actually has very little to do with Upper Fort Gary in any form, that is just the lipstick on the pig.

I see what you are getting at - but what is the actual vested interest?

To maximize their property's value with a high density project next door or to surround their property with a low slung park?

I still question what appears to be the displeasure from a majority on this forum as to what happened at this corner.

We still got our tower a block over, and we got a provincial park. I think (for once) the City got it right and erred on the side of conservation and future thinking as opposed to quickly building over an important part of our history.

Seriously. This is piece of land is one of the key historic parts of the province and is where it all started. If there's anywhere a park should go, this is it. Wait until it's finished. And stow the ridiculous conspiracy theories about how the "elites" have manipulated it for their own benefit.

There's a very good chance that development would never have seen the light of day. Didn't they swap land with the city for another prime location in the same area? Has that development happened?

Never said the land wasn't important. Like Fort Gilbraltar, they should have rebuilt the fort or most of it (Pretty sure part of the fort was on Main Street).

If you believe members of the Manitoba Club had nothing to do with this so called park, I don't know what to tell you.

Yeah, let's overshadow an important part of the city's history with a giant tower. Because, let's face it, there are so few places in downtown Winnipeg where one could build a tower. As evidenced by the fact that nothing's happening downtown right now in terms of tower building.

Rebuilt forts are "tacky". I think what they did here was very cool - much more classy.

So what you're saying is that they should have torn up main street to rebuild the entire fort? You don't have to rebuild an entire fort to commemorate a special historic area. It's very uncommon to rebuild forts that no longer exist. By the way, you may have noticed that Fort Gibralter is made of wood, so it's a little bit of a different thing. If you believe that this was just a giant conspiracy, then I don't know what to tell you.

the head of crystal was frustrated the whole time but kept his cool he took the high road in the end as he had all the legal rights to sue the city over the whole mess.
crystal wasnt the bad guys it was mix of a group that was being rather airigant with their submission thinking o well we dont have to to it proper we will just get this as we have it in the bag mentality and a city councle that aloud for this debacle to unfold the way it did
Kept the high road? Did he not swap for another prime piece of land?

Yeah, those are the people in any community that generally get things done because they have the money and influence to do it. And if they want to use that influence to commemorate a historically important part of our province, and educate Manitobans about it at the same time, then I think that's a good thing. You may have also noticed that it's the same people who are currently transforming the downtown by building condo and office highrises.

Not all of us drew, a silent majority agree with you, myself, but are less vocal on the topic.

I, in this case, like the outcome and it's preservation of our history, others will disagree...

I have absolutely no problem preserving this piece of Winnipeg history. Everyone is up in arms when some POS old building is demo'd, but wants to just blow over the birth place of our City? I get the history with all the heritage buildings, and they are very important to preserve history. But seriously, they are mostly dumps and money pits.

So to get rid of the main piece of history for our City, for some tower that ended up nearby anyways, seems like crazy talk.

Regardless if the outline of the fort is there or not, it's still the same land. I would love for the City to pave the outline crossing Main St. To really show where it was. If there's some stone buried beneath the street, great. If not, fine.

As dumb as I think the whole block-long UFG park idea is, I doubt that it was some conspiracy by the Manitoba Club. That's because the end result of all this is their building now just sits on a mostly vacant windswept lot. It looks terrible.

Why does every argument for the existing setup pretend that the Crystal Tower would have built over the now apparently sacred footprint of Upper Fort Garry?

The plan was to build the tower AND have a park. There was room for both.

I'll keep trying. They are trying to preserve the area where the bulk of the footprint of probably the most important historical area of the province was. It will be a recognition of our history and an educational centre for the founding of the province. There are acres upon acres upon acres of land to build highrises in Winnipeg without building a tower next to and overshadowing such a historically significant area for the city. The developer, who seems to be some sort of folk hero and combination of Gandhi and Martin Luther King on this board, received a prime piece of property in return. There are lots of current new developments and highrises popping up downtown nearby.
