^ Dude, the fort no longer exists, except for the one remaining gate. The "footprint" of the fort is an imaginary concept.

I do not believe that was the way of it. Crystal stepped aside for the project. The city is to blame for reversing its decision.

I was at the Tim's on Plessis Rd today and noticed that the new $50 million dollar plant in the St. Boniface Industrial park is taking shape. I think that it is going into the phase 2 area and will be the first development of that section.

Parmalat's $50 million dollar milk plant is starting to take shape in Phase 2 of the St. Boniface industrial park.

Do you mean the Tim's at Plessis and Devonshire, or the one on Dugald Rd?

Plessis Rd. Tim's and Dugald Rd. Tim's are owned by the same people and I always mix up the two when I talk about them.

You are right, the new Parmalat plant would have to be very tall to see it from the Plessis Rd store lot.

That's the dairy plant that should have gone to East St. Paul. ... lower taxes.

I believe that if E. St. Paul had gotten the factory, and because they're a much smaller municipality, our milk prices would have been a bit lower.

But, one of the thngs that may have factored into the outcome...

Parmalat/Beatrice would have been able to label their dairy as coming from "East St. Paul, Manitoba" instead of Winnipeg, Manitoba....and I guess the Bill Norrie, Ed Shreyer pro-Unicity/pro-amalgamationists types wouldn't have liked that much, eh.

Just posting the plan that was intended. I like the park that is built but what is where the tower is now? Oh yeah, a "temporary surface parking lot".

it will be interesting to see what becomes of the current Parmalat site on st.joseph. I suspect there could be large site remediation costs associated with a future brownfield development. great location though...

I agree. There is also a somewhat strange but intriguing old building about one block south of Parmalat. Don't know the name but I have never seen anything quite like it.

I really wish they would have made a fountain a central component to the the Fort Garry park. It would look great from Main Street and be a nice focal point to hang out around. Oh well.

Regarding the building proposed for the upper Fort Garry site. There was an initial plan that was significantly taller. The last posted image was the second scaled down design.

they said no cause of the parking needed for their building and friends said no as well. crystal had also offerd the friends the whole main floor for free for their interpritive center friends wanted nothing of the sort and the idea of crystal just taking the corner didnt come from the friends that was from one of the councle members cant remember who it was exactly that made that suggestion. was rejected by both.

the head of crystal was frustrated the whole time but kept his cool he took the high road in the end as he had all the legal rights to sue the city over the whole mess.
crystal wasnt the bad guys it was mix of a group that was being rather airigant with their submission thinking o well we dont have to to it proper we will just get this as we have it in the bag mentality and a city councle that aloud for this debacle to unfold the way it did

That's probably the old Kiewel Brewery building your thinking of. It stopped producing beer in the mid 1970's.

Except that that's not how it went down. That aside, I personally don't give a flying f#ck about what was standing somewhere a couple hundred years ago. It's not there now. Are we supposed to bow down and praise where there were some walls over a century ago ? Saving what we have is one thing but pretending that it's somehow going to enrich our culture by pretending that what's gone has somehow been resurrected in our collective psyche does nothing at all.

Crystal didn't bully anybody and in the end they were the only party to take the high road. The city messed up and Crystal bowed to public pressure (although that's not entirely true. It actually bowed to activist pressure) They were completely within their rights to build whatever the city would allow.
