It's nice to see some serious consideration of a rapid transit system in downtown. If they do manage to open up Portage and Main to pedestrians, I think that it will just help showcase how lively downtown Winnipeg is.

A few years ago, there was a plan for a 40-storey condo./apt. tower at Main @ Assiniboine.

The NIMBYs stopped it.

The concepts illustrated are great but then I noticed that their "rapid transit" was only from the street. If anyone has ever driven in or out of downtown at rush hour then you know what a pain in the ass that particular part of main street is. This defeats the point of rapid transit by placing more buses on the road and letting them sit stuck in traffic. As much of a pipe dream this is, winnipeg deserves the Wilson subway.

And voila we ended up with 300 assiniboine AND a provincial park to commemorate the birthplace of our province, and arguably the most interesting historic place in all of Western Canada.

Not a bad trade off IMO.

It's not like we have some shortage of underused land around downtown to build new towers. Luckily someone had some foresight to provide us the Park.

Exactly. I don't get these people that do not see the importance of this park. To them it's just another hunk of land.

As for that tower that was proposed. It wasn't getting built. The city made concessions for crystal and they kept saying no. And who the hell would want to build right beside FGP? One side of the tower would have the most ugly view in the city.

^ I appreciate the importance of history, but there was definitely room for a commemorative park AND the tower, a fact which many park supporters like to overlook.

So rather than a beautiful tower acting as a wonderful gateway into the downtown to conceal said ugly building, more of it is now exposed, with some barren land anchoring it. So lovely.

the park is fine, but there definitely was room for a slim residential development at the corner of assiniboine/garry on top of the interpretive centre. would have added a bit more life to the development.
