The setting at the top of 100 St gives it a very dramatic look within the context of downtown Edmonton. It's set apart a bit from the rest of the downtown streetscape, but in a way that really emphasizes its stature. The lobby has a memorably impressive look that gives it a certain grandeur.

It's height is quite impressive for its era... it was among the tallest in Canada when built. Even the animated sign at the top gives it a bit of an added futuristic feel that evokes an extremely optimistic era in history.

The original railway station function gave it another dimension that embedded it into the urban fabric in a unique way.

There is nothing that isn't to like about the CN Tower... it is really an exceptional building.

Great post! I love Edmonton's CN!

Saskatoon has its much, much, much, much poorer cousin, built atop our downtown shopping mall (which was built in the place of the CN rail station and railyards):

The CN logo is no longer on it, sadly.

^ London had one too, very similar to Saskatoon's in scale. They demolished it some time ago, although the actual station survives. Here's a pic from right before the implosion:

CN was doing some architecturally bold stuff back in the 1960s.

^ Interesting. I had no idea.

Another parallel between Edmonton and Saskatoon's CN towers is that they both provide a terminated vista at the end of a prominent downtown street.

For Saskatoon, it's 21st Street (the front façade of the mall was rebuilt in the 1990s as a heritage replica of the CN station, replacing the modernist entrance that came with the tower):

But I'm partial to the vista at the opposite end of the street:

To each their own. Perhaps it was ahead of it's time for Edmonton. I don't think it's aging very well at all though and is looking cheap compared to some Edmonton's other towers. The Parkade may blend in well in the podium but the podium does nothing for the streetscape. It's a huge blank wall that most of us hate on buildings. The whole building feels cold and unwelcoming, the narrow vertical lines act more like a solid wall then strips of windows.

As for it being one of the tallest when built, it was only the 13th tallest in a nation with very few tall buildings so it was never really up there with the big guys in Montreal. To me it might have been interesting if it still had an active train station in it but it doesn't.

To say there is really nothing to like about is just not true. We all don't have the same tastes and for me there is so much not to like about it.

A few better shots of the CN Tower from Spill on c2e

I used to dislike the tower, but it has really grown on me.

Yeah, great Calgary pics.

I personally think the Vancouver condo aesthetic gets — on a bit too much for the samey-samey rhetoric, but those shots above don't help.

The first Van shot is just fine. The second one less so...

In that last Vancouver shot only three towers stand out. the rest all look exactly the same. Compare that to the Calgary shot where there is much more variety in styles and colours.

Incredible Montreal shot. I've always thought the skyline view from the mountain looked sometimes rusty and small, the omission of the tour de la bourse (hidden behind PVM) has always seemed like an error somehow. but now it seems legit. The new construction have helped alot.

Le Peterson is having a bigger impact than I thought.
