Wow that's really unconscionable on behalf of council. I will be contacting my councilor about this.

If I were the owner I'd driving a bulldozer through it right now and pay fines later.

And really, if they just tore it down and built a really nice new home there, the resale value of the new home would more than make up for any fines imposed I would imagine. The only problem they would run into would be if the city took them to court mid-demolition and the court ordered them to stop (which could then result in contempt charges if they continued).

The City could levy fines well into the six figures. Trying to be head strong with a government is just asking for trouble.

Seriouslly though, I don' think it helped that the owners appeared to thumb their nose at the heritage status of the property at every step from buying without an inspection (who does that?) to basically openly stating they always intented to demolish the place. I'm somewhat sympathetic but not really. Had they approached this differently they may have been successful. Council had the choice of approving this and admitting the bylaw was meaningless or denying it. I don't think the heritage value of the property (none) had much to do with the decision.

They can always put the place back on the market.........and allow potential buyers to do inspections so that they might factor in the costs of rehab.

The Old City Hall has been green since 1972. (Shhhh, I am dating myself --- yes, I was 6 years old at the time.) I thought it looked fascinating from the 7th floor of the Medical & Dental Building.

I'd give it the Travellers' Building treatment. Remove all the windows and let it sit. Maybe tear off the roof and "forget" to put it back on.

They could get you on bylaw infractions, but their enforcement is limited and slow.

I just can't see the Dodds wanting two mortgages, regardless of their income. This past year of sitting there abandoned - paying the mortgage and taxes - will have been painful enough.

They probably paid cash for the new house and are planning on getting a construction mortgage for the build.

You think the original state was a green copper? Looks like oxidation to me, maybe a different kind of copper but I doubt it was always green.

It will be interesting to see if the city takes a similar stand on older buildings in the downtown, which would have more architectural significance and history than this house. For example, the two buildings that currently sit on the site the could eventually be Havard tower 4. Both buildings are attractive architecturally, with some unique architecture features, the angled corner on the law building and the metal lion heads on the building beside it. Something tells me that if Havard comes along and wants to demolish those buildings claiming they are in a state beyond repair the city won't stop them. And yet they stop an individual from knocking down an ugly house.

Has there ever been a formal application or rumblings of a proposal for the section of land that is the former Bay Parkade (now parking) off of Victoria Avenue across from Atlantis?
