Methinks Larson is living in a TFC dream world.
I was actually hoping that journalist was poking fun at the overly concerned TFC fans.

It's not that hard - think of the 10 yard line that's imposed on for games. Also those hockey games that have ads imposed onto the glass behind the nets like so

There are already some fields that use monochrome sponsor logos like Calgary and Sask, IIRC, so it's not even something new in the league either.
Ads on the field are usually not very aesthetically appealing because the colours of the grass and ads clash, but using just the white paint usually doesn't look too bad.

If they are able to shift the goalposts remember the end zones will be artificial turf and half artificial turf so it might be easier to manipulate that than natural turf over post holes.

Also remember that they are still space-confined and don't really have the latitude to move the field (much). The end zones are being trimmed to 17 yards to fit in the stadium footprint as it is

Oh yeah. The Sens are serious about this. If they win the right to develop the Flats (and I think they will, not just because they actually own the team, but because their plan is the best in terms of urban design and the most viable over all), they want the new arena open for 2021.

Compare it to Edmonton's ICE District, we have about 52 acres to their 35 acres. Tallest will likely be around 400 feet, just about half the height of Edmonton's tallest at ICE. No official number on office space, but likely around 1.5 million square feet. Roughly 4,600 residential units, 25% of which will be affordable housing (not to be confused with social housing; affordable housing will be provided by http://ccochousing.org/ who build apartments in a price range in between social housing and conventional rentals).

Next to the arena, they would build a 500 room signature hotel and an additional 300-400 rooms elsewhere in the district.

We would also have a two rink "Sensplex", which would be used as the official training and practice facility of the team and a community centre. The "Sensplex" also includes an abilities centre, to be incorporated by the same group that brought the one in Whitby (http://www.abilitiescentre.org/home).

Disagree Calgary is a cluttered downtown full of new buildings which lacks charm or any distinction while edmonton has a charming downtown with old mixed with new like hotel Mac which makes a postcard like photo from the south . Calgary was built up fast with no direction whatsoever . They may have more building but Edmonton much more charming looking downtown IMO.

While the street-level interface is more important in terms of vitality, the argument was about skylines. Nevertheless, both downtown Calgary and Edmonton are CBDs and as vibrant as most CBDs; not very.

Wouldn't be surprised if Telus scooped it up. Didn't they want the naming rights for BC Place (but the government decided they wanted to keep it as BC Place)?

Yeah BC place was supposed to be telus park but the local government decided that people were too attached to the bc place name (garbage) to let the name go for market value (40M over 16years). Ive always been surprised about the lack of a telus named stadium/arena either than telus field in Edmonton which I'm sure cost less than 100K a year and they didn't renew it. I had a big feeling that Edmonton's new arena would be named Telus place/telus arena. Rogers seems to have a mandate to name every sports venue in canada.

Out of curiosity, why do you think they will drop the naming rights?

They have a deal in place until 2020 I believe, I could see them dropping it then.

Could just be Rogers going all in on the NHL, wanting to keep more of the publicity for themselves? Wouldn't really do to have to say a competitors name (if Telus) when broadcasting the games.

forsure but is it worth 2 million a year just to keep telus out of the loop? I'm just stating 80% of major sports venues in canada are named after some kind of communications company or bank and in a lot of recent cases It's a domestic company to that province or city (Tim hortons field,Canadain tire centre). I can't see why telus can't make a huge push to get the naming rights to something in this country even if it cost them an extra million a year over market value. Way too many major projects in this country over the past decade to pass up. sasktel jumped on saskatoons arena when the rights came up ,mts jumped on winnipeg, Videotron jumped on quebecs, shaw even has one ,rogersx3,bellx2, It's hard to believe a company as big as Telus wouldn't want a presence in the major sports world, especially in Vancouver of all places! they never should have gave up on BC place and rogers never should have got the naming rights for an arena in DT Vancouver or Edmonton let alone both. Telus headquarters is out of burnaby and the company was founded in Edmonton.

As for rogers arena i didn't know they signed a 20 year agreement.

Rogers lost tonnes of money on the Jays until this last season... and many commentators have suggested that they will lose on the NHL deal they made as well, having overpaid by quite a bit. The notion on profit seems to be more of an aside for Rogers when it comes to sports-type investments.

Doesn't matter even if they lose on the NHL deal. They practically killed TSN's main revenue stream which puts a knife deep in Bells plans for the channel. The CFL and MLS will keep TSN on life support along with tennis, darts and a bunch of other trash that we don't care about but I hope to god the hockey panellists and production crew jump ship as Sportnet is the worst in canada by far! I used to watch a lot of Oilers games and I have to tell you it doesn't even compare to TSN jets or any other hockey broadcast by TSN. Half the time they don't even show the anthems! (which as a jets fan really pisses me off) and The commentators are horrible. They are better than fox sports or commcast (We are really spoiled as Canadians compared to any american televised hockey) But still either than HNIC I don't care to watch any hockey game that isn't produced by TSN. Sportnet oilers/flames ect are absolute garbage.

It's simple, they don't think the business case is strong enough.

It's not a 20 year deal, it's 10 years. 2010 to 2020.

I think the main reason Telus didn't get naming rights for BC Place is more to do with Bell being a major sponsor of the Whitecaps. Bell is across their jersey.
