There was a pretty nasty Trax derailment on the North Temple overpass today. The train actually went through the concrete wall on the side of the bridge and caused quite a bit of damage... I wonder how long the airport line will be down.

Also... The Chalk Gardden has moved from the Crandle building to Trolly Square. It's sad to see another empty store on Main Street, however, the chalk Gardden will be a nice fit for Trolly Square... I wish Trolly would get a green bike station.

I kind of hope the now empty lot above Starbucks becomes a place to eat.

I like that Chalk Garden is moving to Trolley, that is it's original home.

I agree, that would be an excellent location for a restaurant.

I'm at the airport right now and the trax line appears to be up and going. I'm seeing trains entering and leaving the station.

I haven't been to the Chalk Garden since it was in Trolley.
I knew it was on 1st and Main, but never stepped in. Is it still the same posh type place?

Those brownstones remind me of Philly in "Trading Places".

They're probably running until the Fair Park. I think it'll be a day or two before the Green Line is back to good. I walked by the accident within a half an hour of it happening (I heard it in my apartment). The derailed train also took out two of the Trax Power Poles.
The accident was horrific. The driver ran through the lowered arms and died at the scene and 14 people from the train were treated for injuries.

The paper states that the driver ran through the TRAX barricade arms at a high rate of speed and head on into the train. Also, 4 minutes previous, he is considered at fault for a hit and run accident. I think it's pretty obvious he was under the influence of something. He had been arrested and arraigned just a few months previous for another dangerous incident while under the influence, and for assaulting an officer. I'll be interested to see why this walking time bomb was out amongst the general public. Probably another regrettable and preventable tragedy. Thank goodness none of the innocent nearby pedestrians and TRAX passengers were killed.

This might come across callous, and since no pedestrians or no one on the train were seriously injured (I read minor injuries), I simply call this a thinning of the heard.

And Yes Jedi, you can come to a party and hang out with the plants.

I feel okay about 'thinning the herd.' Because this guy got himself killed instead of arrested, he just saved taxpayers all kinds of $$$ by not requiring court fees and jail time (throwing people in jail costs $$). In the long term, he may just have saved the same amount of money it would cost to fix all the stuff he smashed, even though obviously those would be from a different pot of money. I just wish society could self-regulate in this way without needing to smash up all our nice things and close down transit lines and send people to the hospital and stuff like that.

Of course not. Ideally this dude would have lived, gone through whatever punishments he was given, reformed his life, and become a contributing citizen. I would be much happier if that's what happened. Use of Darwinian-based genetic principles like natural selection ('thinning the herd') are very clearly not applicable to social structuring, no matter how tempting it may be to draw simplistic lines between the two. But since the ideal outcome was not realized, the only thing I can think to do is to seek a silver lining with a dark sense of humor. This is the internet, after all.

Back to development: I was reading this bit of news about the Utah State Capitol being 100 years old this year, and the state turning 120 years old. It was mentioned that the building was criticized for being too big/expensive for a state with only 300,000 people. And now to think that our population just passed 3 million (roughly the size of Lithuania). Over the course of a century our state's population grew by a factor of 10. If it does that again, in 2116 we will have 30 million people (roughly the size of Malaysia or Saudi Arabia today). Consider that for context.

Yikes. This is cold. No matter the mental state of the individual, someone's death is hardly something to be relieved about saving a relatively insignificant amount of money.

What is the story with the new Brew pub?

The proposed brewery was actually in the building just to the east of the identified structure. It received a conditional use permit for its operation but has not moved forward with a project.
